Default Alternative to Harris Safety Silv

Hey guys, stumbled across an alternative to $$$ Harris Safety Silv. I had bought one troy ounce of Harris for about $35 bucks and ran out yesterday. Being the poor college student that I am, I figured I had to put my tube work on the back burner. Went with the g/f to buy art supplies and found out that the local art store carries silver solder upwards of 75% pure silver! Got some 65% solder and walked out the door. Just used it, and it works as well as the Harris, it is just flimsier. It also looks like it brazes better to me.

Oh the kicker? I got 3ft of it for $3 bucks

Nice!

The price of the solder was the main thing that turned me off from brazing... if I can find a place that sells that stuff I'd love to give it a try sometime.

Have you tested the joints you brazed with it? How did they hold?

Pics? Name of the stuff?

I use a different brand of the Harris stuff and only pay about 18$ for a troy oz, normally I can get 2 rigs from one.

When I said flimsier, I meant the wire diameter, not the strength of the joint. I stood on the roof of my tuber today after brazing...no problems and I'm right at 200#s. It goes by the name of easy silver. Should be available at most art stores(got it from my university art store). Looks just like solder, but is thinner in diameter. Just bought 10ft of the stuff for $15.

I've used this stuff too with success. If you shop around you can get silver solder cheaper. It doesn't have to be Harris.

Not sure man, the only info it gives me on the package is easy solder and it is 65% silver. I believe art stores carry it for jewelry making etc. I was really surprised when they had it. The ONLY thing that I have noticed between this product and Harris Safety Silv, is the diameter of the wire. The Harris is larger diameter and doesn't burn as much, however the Easy Solder seems to make better joints IMO.

If I remember correctly, this stuff has cadmium in it. I like to limit my intake of heavy metals .

Harris Safety silv isn't as expensive if you buy it in the 50 t.o. boxes. I think I got it for $300, so about 6 bucks a t.o. Of course, I tend to use it a bit more often than most :-P

Went to both Micheal's and Hobby Lobby today and couldn't find it at either one.

I go to East Carolina University, I found it in our school's art shop. Like you found, Micheals doesn't have it nor does hobby lobby. I would suggest finding a university near you and finding an art supply store near it.

I'm using standard flux with it and it works as well.

ecoli, yeah I definitely don't need 300t.o of it. Holy crap man, how many chassis' do you build?

Quick search and I found this.

It says "easy flow solder". I imagine it would be the same solder you bought YJJPWrangler.

They have 56% to 75%.

19ft for $25.00 would be about $1.31 per foot. Might look into buying it as a cheaper alternative to Harris.

Thought I'd update:
I just got my order in today from the link I posted above. Works perfectly, much smaller rod so it burns easier which also results in brazing quicker.

did you try an type of strength test on the joint to see how well it holds?

Tested it just like I always do.

Brazed two joints together, clamp one end in a bench vise and pry on the opposing end. Just like with Harris, the brake line bent and the joints showed no signs of cracking or prying apart.

I also just got done brazing some small body tabs, the smaller size of this solder reduced ,"wandering" solder versus the larger size of Harris (the solder flowed where I wanted it to).
