Propane does not get hot enough. Mapp by itself does for most things you'd use on an rc. If you get into heavy solid rod then you'll want to look at either an oxy/mapp or an oxy/acetalene setup. Do not get the benzomatic one that uses disposable oxygen cylinders you'll waste a ton of money on the oxygen. Quite a few builders on here swear by the Smith Little Torch for that type of setup.

If you have a store in town that supplies HVAC repairmen, they probably have some Harris Silv and fluxes there.

Little Smith Torch will run around $136 and that does not include the regulators that you'll need. They do have preadjusted regulators that go on the disposables that run around $60 on ebay that I saw. The adjustable regulators sell for around $95, but this allows for a bigger size and refillable tanks. So it'll be around the $400 dollar range and higher depending on which set up you go.

I agree,
I started out with the Benzomatic Propane/Oxy setup and even finding the oxy for $4.00 per cylinjder at Home Depot it's too expensive. About 15 minutes of work time per oxy cylinder.

I just went this route,
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

getting my tanks and caddy locally but if you have the $ to spend here's a kit with everything.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Harris Safety Silver solder, little over $10 bucks an ounce,
http://cgi.ebay.com/Five-Troy-Ounces...item1c13c84ddf

I got the combo in the first link, the others turned up in a search since I was on e-bay already anyway.

With that attitude you should let other people build everything for you. The best part of scale is the satisfaction of designing and building all your own stuff. I bought a complete oxy-acetylene setup off craigslist for $225, then bought a 5 oz. roll and can of flux for $90 and Ive built 2 tube chassis plus countless bumpers, sliders, etc. A little silver solder goes a long ways, especially once you get good with it. Try it out, nothin wrong with learning a new skill.......

I have some Safety Silv 15 and I would be using it with an oxy/acetalene setup. Any chance that would work?

I don't have any experience with SS15, but I'm thinking that it might not work too well.

50 bucks and you can have a mapp torch and tank.. by some freaking brazing rod at Home depot and learn how to do it.. You dont have to spend 300 bucks on gear to make parts.

not brass tubing either brakeline or some type of steel so you can figure out how hot you need to heat it up to get proper flow
