Do you mean topsoil, or sand? As it was already pointed out dirt/topsoil is pretty much the same.

I would use sand, or a mixture.. I think topsoil would be too sticky and remove some of the challenge on or around rocks, sand would add a little slippage which is more of a challenge, but I'm also new at this.

Dirt is dirt.....who knows what is in it.
Topsoil is usually screened, that takes out the rocks/small stones, roots, twigs, etc.
Potting soil is usually a mix of topsoil & mulch.

Dirt is the cheapest/easiet to use, I would use it.
Actually, I would use rocks, unless you're asking how to hold the rocks and are going to use the dirt to "lock the rocks in place".

Whatever is under your grass is probably the right thing to use for trailing once it's packed down. Add some rocks and lumber and you'll have some crawling. Potting soil is generally not dense enough to compress well for trails. It's usually got a filler in it to allow for drainage.
