The weakest link in abs printing is the layers separating from themselves overtime the upside to this if u need a new part just print a new one.

You don't cut anything with a 3d printer. Mills, routers, and lathes are used to cut, known as subtractive machining. 3d printers do just what the name implies. They print melted plastic in layers to create an object.

Current & interesting article regarding 3D printers.
3D Printing Costs a Pretty Penny, but Options Abound

It doesn't make real comparisons, but gives an idea what is out there now.

Would this be a viable option for scale bodies? Or would they be too brittle/bulky?

It would take far too long to be profitable for production but would work for one off applications.

One of the biggest issues is the size of the printer. Most of them in the article won't do a 1:10th scale full body, maybe a cab & then a bed.
Printers big enough to do a single piece body are getting expensive.

As to whether it could take the abuse, others would have to answer that one.

A whole body would have to be printed in pieces on most of the printers available. As far as durability, that can be designed into the design for the most part, since the plastics used are the same as thermo-injected bodies.

Also, as said, this would take a long time to print, and would probably end up costing way more than anyone would want to pay. That's not even accounting for the time to draft up the body in CAD. For now, entire bodies are pretty much out of the question.

One thing to remember is a 3D printer can do stuff that is either difficult or near impossible to machine... that said its still got a ways to go. I think subtraction production will be used a lot for parts in the future due to costs but for tiny detail parts like what Krawler Koncepts is doing the printer makes total sense.

In the end I think its a great idea but its going to take some time to make it happen properly. I build model trains on the side and that industry has REALLY benefited from 3D printers. Now you can make just about anything in your garage with relative ease even though on some stuff I can machine it faster than it can be printed

Electronics too?

I've got my electronics now, and will be getting my hot end soon. I was going to build my own, but the cost to experiment was going to be almost as much as buying a ready to run unit.

I'm shooting to have it running by the end of the year. I have to tear it all apart this week (again ), so maybe I'll shoot a bunch of pictures and start a thread.

I will be hooked to it if you start a thread.
