Default flux core welding ??

Ive been watching tons of rc welding videos and most of what ive seen with chassis welding is either brazing or the nice aluminum welding.

I would love to pick up a smith mini torch, or even a nice aluminum welder but right now im doing good enough to pay the house notes but I do have a Chicago harbor freight wire feed flux core welder.

I know this isn't the most ideal setup but its available to me and its all I got to work with right now.

Has anyone else used this method to weld up chassis? Im not great at welding yet but I would have to say im a little past the novice stage.

What are your guys thoughts on this or will I just be wasting my time here?

Its doable. That's all I had for years. Only issue with flux core is the splatter. That makes it like 50x the clean up of brazing and probably double the cleanup of a mig. I welded a chassis for my super years ago and spent more time with a flap wheel and a dremel than I did welding the chassis.

Thats what i was thinking that the biggest part would be the joints being less clean and having a hard time getting to some of the tight spots the tip on my welder isnt the smallest

Now i just got to find a decently priced supplier for steel tubing / sheets

X2

The only drawback is the post-weld cleanup, other than that it works just fine for R/C chassis fab.

Spray a bit of anti spatter spray on the material surrounding the weld area. It will save you some time.

Smear some oil mixed with Vaseline or just Vaseline on the metal and the splatter won't stick that bad

Hoping to pick up a Harbor Freight flux wire solder for my first setup i'll be using to build at least one chassis with. What sort of slag or splatter are we talking? from google images, it doesn't look like it'd be much of an issue on a 3/16 or 1/4" rod chassis vs having a large plate or something you're welding on.

the only welding I have not done was tig, but out of all the others I like stick welding for get down and weld stuff, 2nd was mig more for small welds in tight spots for ease of clean up "grinding" and detail....I have built metal scroll ornate railings with both mig and stick with great looking finished jobs....give me a stick over a mig any day ....
