The head is a mh-4. Sold 2 make horizontal mills, vertical mills. If the pancake motor smokes, Bring lube and spread um, Big $. a good head cost about 500. The rest ??? You did good, if it all works under load.

Nice snag for 500, the curt vise if in decent condition is at least half that.... Can't wait to see it in its new home.

So it's a horizontal Rockford miller 1 1/2 that was retro fitted with the Tree vert head. The site I found says they were made in the teens or 20's.. Cool!

Looks like the small motor runs the table power feed. Nice find. I believe the tree heads use no.3 morse taper collets.

It ran on LP. So the lift and trailer rental cost me 275 so I'm into it for 775. It came with the new vise, a full set if collets, a clamp kit and various tooling. I'm pretty happy but can't play till I get 220 wired in my new garage, bummer..

You got a good deal, even with the rental costs.

I finally got her fired up today. It has a series of gears/clutches that power feeds the table in all 3 directions, cool as hell

Im still trying to figure out how to change the feed rates. Its all adjustable through the gear box but its a little complex.

Way cool, and you have a nice shop for it. I, and I'm sure that I speak for everyone else, just have to know- what did the wifey say when you told her she has to put her car outside to make room for the new tool?

I've been in the CNC business for about 10 years now and the old timers are right. There is nothing like old Iron!!! You stole it for that kinda money. $1200 to $1500 here in Michigan

So, I brought home another old mill. This time a 1955 Bridgeport. This link says that it is rare because the ram can be moved in and out by a rack/pinion. Guess they didn't make too many that did that. I got it from a machine shop that was relocating back east. The guy who sold it to me said that it had been in that shop since new and at some point had the original head replaced. I also made out with a couple thousand dollars worth of old steel and aluminum stock for free.

Can anyone tell me what year that head was made? Its a J head right?

Got her torn down. Now I have to build some fixtures to help un stick the knee. If the knee fix goes well, I'm gonna clean up the 60 years worth of grease and chips then put some paint on it.
