| Question to the E-Maxx experts
Not sure this is a crawler related question, but it is derived from my crawler..... My girl friend has a 6 year old boy who is getting a e-maxx for christmas. (lucky little........) Anyway, it's gonna be way to much for him, speed wise, straight out of the box. Now he's messed about with my crawler on the back yard, which is just about the right speed for him. (lathe motors so it's slow.) So, question is, how would you go about slowing down a standard e-maxx? Single battery mod on the evx? Gearing? Something else? I want to keep it fairly stock so he can use it when i'm out with my crawler or brushless e-maxx, plus so that whatevers done can be reversed as he gets better control of the truck. Thanks for your opinions guys. Newth. Last edited by newth; 11-09-2007 at 05:28 PM. |

you can either gear it down or put a pair of lathe motors in it...thats the simplest way...but why an emaxx for a 6 year old...

Because a T-Maxx requires too much maintenance heat and chemicals for a 6-year old?

Do the one battery mod to the esc, and lock it in first.

another idea might be to program the esc with limited throttle instead of normal full. there should be instructions with it about how to program it. id honestly keep it stock because its a pretty good setup as is, all i would worry about is the speed. |

thanks for the replies guys. i thought the e-maxx for 2 reasons, 1 - he loves mine, 2 - spares & maintainance should be easier as i have 1 too. it'd definately need to be locked into 1st to start with, i think the idea of gears will be a little much for a 6 year old novice! never thought about that idea with the throttle, good one. sounds like i need to have a play when it arrives. i just remember the stock e-maxx being a bit of a handful when straight out of the box. if i decide to run it on the single battery mod (which seems a good idea as i can run the 2 batteries in parallel for more capacity) will it harm the stock motors long term, or will they be ok? obviously he'll eventually want a little more speed, so i don't want to wreck the thing & end up buying a complete new set of electrics for it! thanks again guys, keep the advice coming. |

heck, i say get the lathe motors, that way you will have 2 spare motors when he grows out of that slow speed! like a 45T motor or something |

put a restrictor on the controller so the trigger can only be pulled so far

Try a 72 Tooth spur gear an Robinson 9 tooth pinions; that should slow it down a lot! 15 bucks and five minutes! Remember, the Maxx is for him!! |

i don't want to have to spend money on lathe motors, to be honest, i didn't really want to spend the money on a maxx in case he decides it's not for him after all, but after discussing it with my girlfriend, it seemed the right way to go.

| a very good point, but then i don't want it spending most of it's life broken because it's too fast for him. soon as he can handle it well, i want to slowly start to bring it back up to stock, then more if required. i thought about altering the spur & pinion, but won't that just turn it into a wheelie special? |

A lathe motor will work great with the stock 66/18 ratio IFF you use the 7.2v single batt converion (Most lathe motors are 7,2v) I have tried it with a single bat a novak cyclone a 32T motor and 66/12 gears You canīt use the stock titans with only one batt (2x14,4v motor powerd by one 7,2v batt) Here is a small vid of me and my 5 1/2 and 7 year old sons at the beach they have bin driving my trucks and buggies sine they could hold the transmitter and even my little 2 year old girl si hookd http://s190.photobucket.com/albums/z...t=2d721ed0.pbr

I would sugggest running it from one battery, but let him have the two speeds. That way he can get used to it. Once he graduates let him use the full 12 cells and just first gear, then second gear. OR put two lathe motors in there, but that is more money. |

Teach the boy to drive and how to save up money for spare parts. No matter how you try to govern the speed, he is going to break something.

I let me 2 year old drive our stock E-Maxx... He either operates the throttle or steers, normally it's hitting the gas and ramming the house or our trees. Good times. To slow it down, drop a couple of 55-turns in there. Works like a charm |

yup, thanks! and i was thinking about the single battery thing, but if you put a govenor on the trottle trigger, that was he will get alot longer runtimes! I got my dad an e-maxx and when I played with it i got like 10min. but my dad likes to chill and just "play" with it he gets around 25min

Running just a single motor on a single battery would be a good idea too...

Putting a limit on the ESC makes it work very hard. You would be much better off to halve the voltage instead of halving the throttle.
