G-Made Shocks

So I have not run mine yet, still waiting on a receiver. But with the headaches from building, installing/adjusting, and looking forward to servicing the seal cartridge. That Circlip is going to be a giant P.I.T.A. No matter how many takes it took Josh to make it look easy on YouTube. I am already looking to upgrade them.

That being said. I am running Proline on my Bomber and 10.3. they are great, work well, don't leak, but are spendy. The G-Made RSDs look like they will bolt right in. However I do like how the big bores feel and handle on the 10.3. Any one running these yet:

Just looking to see options on the idea. And get a feel for the quality of the shocks before I pull the trigger.

The circlips are easy , with a good tool.
The dravtech’s have used clips for years.
I have a set of round nose jewelry pliers I use, easy peasy.

Agreed, c-clips aren't my favorite seal retention method but it is easy enough with the proper tools.

I have taken apart and reassembled my Phoenix kit shock seals and it is about 10 seconds to pull the clip out and less than 30 to get them reinstalled and seated properly (I haven't built a set of shocks with c-clips in years, your results may vary). Unless you are rebuilding shocks weekly, it really isn't adding any significant amount of time to your wrenching life.

Hi Flatlander - personally I would stick with the kit shocks, you ought to be impressed with how plush they are...

That said, if you want to change to some GMade shocks, you'd be better off with the regular RSD shape, not the reservoir version - as the shock towers on the VS4-10 would mean the reservoirs stick out towards the tyres, and you could well end up with them rubbing at full articulation.

for info. this is the 80mm body RSD shock on a Vanquish tower:


photo. note GMade [plastic] upper shock eyelet fits perfectly into the Vanquish double-shear mount.

I'd also add that the stock GMade springs are significantly stiffer than the Vanquish springs (which is why I've swapped to an alternative in the photo above) - however, they are the same diameter so you could fit the Vanquish kit springs onto the RSD shock bodies, and you'd have a nice shock combo.

Personally, I would stick with the kit shocks. Outside of the collar issue they are really nice.

As far as the two gmade shocks you linked I prefer the performance of the diaphram shocks. They might be some of the best value on the market.

As mentioned above and in my experience the springs included in the RSD shocks are waaay too stiff. Even after ordering their softer springs I found the RSD much too stiff.

Boy some people are sensitive,

The issues I have with the shocks revolve 100% around the adjustment collars. The circlip is just a personal opinion. My meat hooks are not meant for such small tasks.

Because of how tight the collars are, I popped two of the caps off trying to turn them. I had to hold the shock body with a pair of pliers to keep them from rotating. After finally getting the collars on the shocks correctly and adjusted. I agree, they are smooth and well suited for the rig. They have been together for about a week and a half, and are not leaking. So that is another positive. The shocks will get their fair shake. I was just inquiring about the G-Made Shocks as an alternative. Maybe if they come out with some aluminum upgrade parts for the shocks, that might be a good option.

That's what I replaced mine with. They went on like butter, I can adjust all 4 very easily.

These came today... Panther said they worked great on the phoenix shocks, so I ordered a set.

I run the Gmade XD diaphragm 85mm dampers on 4 of 9 crawlers at my house. All 4 that have the XD's are SCX10 II rigs with front laydown battery trays and NiMH batteries. The springs provided are perfect for the heavy battery packs in the front of the rigs. For the rears I purchased the aftermarket soft springs, 19x50mm if I recall correctly. I run the provided silicone fluid with the 3-hole pistons, Green Slime in the O-rings.

I'm quite pleased with the performance of the dampers and have not experienced any leaks. They look good, clean up easily and have a bump stop in the lower spring retainer. Hot Racing sells red pivot balls if you want the whole rig to match the red in the dampers.
