Default 1st Build Thread.... Sunday Cruiser 1:1 look alike

My first build thread.....woot. I slowed down a little to take pictures unlike my Dingo kit. Which while building, I got in the groove and didn't come up for air let alone pictures. The plan is to make my Ascender resemble our family Sunday cruiser....

I've got it mostly built for now....stockish & waiting on paint & body. Everyone has seen build threads with pictures of axles & such so I will try to keep that to a minimum.

1st build pick!

Battery Tray Mod! Haven't seen this one yet anywhere else....but I didn't look very hard.

2015-01-21 12.51.27

Some self vulcanizing tape or fuel line placed on the cross brace would tighten up mount. I've left it for now.

2015-01-21 12.51.41

Would have cost $0 but I couldn't find the black clips that I know I have so it cost maybe $2 for a new bag of cable clips.

Some how, mounting all of my esc's on their side became a "thing" with me.

Dingo

& Wraith

& MTDT

Two of them were mounted on the side due to space restrictions and the other two were done that way because of preference/convenience.

New scale wheels! GCM Racing 6 Bolt 8-hole beadlock wheels. The TSL's didn't mount to these wheels as easy as the Ripsaws did on my Dingo, but still pretty easy. Because of the pin drive on these wheels vs the the standard 12mm hex drive, I was required to put some small spacers(washers) on the rear axles to take up the slop.

These wheels match up to the factory rims quite well I think. And if I decide to get rims for the Full size blazer, they will be the Mickey Thompson Classic III anyways. I should be good.

Battery mounted and everything powered up for the initial test drive with the new DX4C

Worked great, ripped around in the basement with no shell for probably 10 minutes crawling over all of my sons toys that he left out... Needs a bit more speed (larger pinion/smaller spur on order), I'm sure I can walk faster than it right now. I may put in the two speed later but for now I want to get the body and such finished up.

Servo horn clearance for those wondering. Racer's edge servo Horn on a Hitec 7955 servo. Tight but it all clears mounted longitudinally in the chassis.

Nice full size. I've got a '87 myself but it doesn't look as clean as yours.

I like the rims you picked up The will look good on the ascender.

Step that battery up to a 3 cell for more power, speed, and efficiency. Going with a smaller spur and bigger pinion might put too much load on the motor. The stock spur is small enough. I'd love to change mine out for a 90, but I'm not sure which manufacturer would work.

From what i can tell losi uses the same spurs as vaterra. At least you can use a losi spur for thw twin hammers.

I'm going to try the smaller spur(78T from a TH) and see where that gets me. With the 86/20 gearing right now the motor doesn't even warm up. I'll keep an eye on temps and see if I get the result I want. I've never really thought of going to 3s for any of my rigs. I've been keeping everything setup for 2s, then I can grab any battery and go. I might have to give 3s a go sometime though.

Here is some more detail on mounting the GCM wheels

I needed to add spacers to take up some excess play when going from Vaterra style hex drive to GCM's pin drive. I didn't like seeing the spacers every time I took the wheels off so I made a small change.

This required re-drilling the lockout screw holes closer to the edge of the axle tube. Hopefully the little bit of meat that is there will hold strong.

Body Trimmed. Now to figure out mounting. Magnet's or velcro? I'm leaning towards magnets.

Time for paint....not very exciting...but match's the full size.

I was painting a new set of skins for my wraith as well. It was time to get rid of the RTR graphics and make it my own.

My in-between coats entertainment of choice....RoadKill

I still have to try to tint the side cap windows(to get them darker than the fronts) to match the full size. And I screwed up and forgot to mask the taillight section. I'll have to try to remove a bit of that paint when I get my Dinky Rc tail lights.

Bumpers are on order and HeyOk remote light controller came in the mail today! I haven't attempted any type of mounting yet either.

looks good all painted up, maybe swap tires for a 1.9 bfg look alike and your mini me will be complete lol. Have you ever played around with using the fine tip sharpie to do the jamb lines for doors, hood etc? it would add a bunch to the white paint I think.

Funny you should mention it. I used the sharpie the other night to better define the body lines. Bumpers are on now two. Mounting the body tonight with magnets and wiring in is progress.

Pics aren't the greatest, snapped them quick before starting to shoe goo the magnets on.

On the BFG's..... two things I love the look of them and they have been a very good tire for me in the past...however they pick up every rock and throw them at the rockers on the full size. The other thing is the plan for the full size in to put a 4" lift on it and go with a 33" or 34" tire. I likely won't go with the BFG's again, so I figured I'd hold off on buying the RC4WD dirt grabbers or any other scale tire until the full size is sorted out.

Looks great with the lines marked out, I'm really into this kit after seeing few of them built so I might have to start saving.

On the tires yeah I used to run bfg's on all my dd trucks till I started having quality issues with them and bfg wouldnt stand behind them. On your 1:1 a 2.5" will clear 33's nice and 4" will just tuck 35's depending on width and wheels used (I ran a 34x10.50 on those exact wheels for awhile and they looked good).

I really like this idea because instead of spending money or making something new I'm using the same idea as you. But I mounted the tray to the axle cuz it move the tray when u flex and feel it'll keep the weight down on axle better.

Final finished product for now. Still waiting for GCMracing to get some DinkyRC taillights in. Have some final tweaking to do with rear shocks.
