Default kit vs. rtr

Are there any differences between the kits other than one is rtr? What website do you recommend to purchase upgrades from and what upgrades do you recommend?

Other than it's RTR there isn't a difference between the two. As for upgrades, the HD pinion gears are a must and either the Vaterra HD driveshafts or MIPs, I personally like the MIP route. Other than those two things Vaterra makes aluminum knuckles, shocks and front and rear c hubs which are all nice pieces.

As for where to buy, it's personal preference for many but it's hard to beat RPP.

So the kit version comes with better pinions and HD axles? Seems like the kit is a better choice like Axial kits?

The aftermarket folks need to move quicker on upgrades for the K5.

There isn't a difference between the two when it comes to hardware. Both have spacers for the links, both can be adjusted for wheelbase, both have aluminum throughout links and such.

When I recently bought a replacement stock diff spool it came with the improved pinion. So I would guess future releases of both the RTR and kit will have the improved pinions.

The Kit and RTR are identical so really it comes down to preference. Personally I'd prefer to pick my electronics, but the RTR is only $80 more for a radio, reciever, servo, ESC, and motor. You could probably sell that stuff off on eBay and easily make your money back if you wanted to avoid building a kit, but still pick your electronics. Then again you'll be stuck with a Red body. Personally I'd prefer to paint my own.

As far as i can tell the only difference between the 2 is that you pick your own electronics for the kit. So if you want a brushless set up our s specific servo ect. The kits the way to go

I just got the Ascender RTR from RPP, my first RTR crawler. I went with the RTR because it comes with the 4 channel receiver/painted body. I do not like the Blazer body so it would have never got painted. I pulled it out of the box, replaced rims, tires, esc, servo, body, and shocks. Also, as far as I can tell the esc mount is integrated into the esc. I used and Axial servo mount for the new esc tray mount. The RTR does not come with a build manual like you get in the kit. I think that should be included but you can download one from the Vaterra site. The stock steering is awesome!!!

If you order it from RPP make sure you check out there coupons. Also, they are the quickest company to process orders and ship, and they have excellent customer service.

Unless they changed the radio from the stock unit it's not a 4 channel, it's a 2 channel system.

My question would be, if you were going to replace all that anyhow why not buy the kit?

The 4 channel receiver $60.00
Unpainted Blazer Body $60.00
Speed Controller $60

Kit vs RTR is $75 difference

Kit at RPP is $289.99
RTR at RPP is $364.99

I love building the kits but my job has prevented me from having
much free time.

So just want to be sure we're talkin about the same thing.

The RTR factory radio from Vaterra in the Ascender is the Spektrum DX2e, is this the same radio you're talkin about?

It is a 2 channel system but the receiver is 4 channel.

Transmitter is 2 channel
Receiver is 4 channel

It's all good...

Another thing I noticed was the RTR version provides no additional hardware to reduce wheel base.

The hardware is built into the rig, extensions already on the links.

Well I feel completely misinformed, I was told the ends on the links are the spacers (remove them for shorter wheelbase)

And yes I have the RTR

Download the manual. If you've been in the hobby for long you have the parts to reduce the wheel base.

Jay I believe your correct in this case. Rtr comes with the longest setup. Remove the spacers and you will end up shorter
