Default Front Differential

So the completely open front diff is quite annoying and useless.
Well I had everything torn down and got to thinking; what will allow for slow spinning, but lock when needed if spun too fast?

So I mixed up some corn starch and (tap) water (distilled would probably be best) cleaned out the housing and filled her up. This seems to work quite well. But I have no run time on this and will report back with results when everything is put back together (brushless on 3s .)

Haha, but the way this works it essentially becomes "locked" when either front wheel spins freely after loosing its grip.

Plus it was a free little experiment.

I want to keep mine a Rock Racer (crawl, jump, bash, etc..)

For this purpose: Diff fluid (not super thick) would be better and have a longer life than silly putty (very thick and specifically for crawling).

Right?

Lockers are specifically for rock crawling.

True, but you know what I mean.

In my case the silly putty probably wouldn't be ideal because I will be doing more than just crawling.

I guess you're right about leaving it open for now and not bothering with diff fluid..

Could, but doubtful if distilled/de-ionized h2o were used. Also if it's filled to the brim with no o2 present the rusting will likely take awhile to develop.

I'm using silly putty currently with great results...
It's weaker than a locker so the axles won't just sheer, but
Allows for a little diff action under cornering..
I'm sure 1,000,000wt silicone is the ticket but the putty worked in a pinch.

After cleaning out my front case, I filled my front diff with 20,000wt oil. I will be doing high speed and crawling. I think I'm gonna change it out to 30,000wt. It's not slow enough for me for crawling. just my 2 cents. later.

Cornstarch and water is a great idea actually, when you attempt to move through it slow it will allow for it and when you try and move through it fast, it firms up.... See mythbusters: walking on water.

The cornstarch is made up of long chains of atoms - a polymer. These chains can move past each other, but they take some time to do this. If you pour it slowly, it can flow like a liquid. If you try to force things and make the chains slide more quickly than they want to, they get entangled - and the mixture gets firmer. So if you push hard on it, it acts more like a solid.

Thanks for that educated response. I just saw something on PBS the other night about the periodic chart and atoms... It was super fascinating to be re-educated after all these years!

You either run diff oil or the locker, not both together. The locker locks it, no diff action between front wheels. By using various grades of oil you can change the amount of give between front wheels with oil used.
