Default Open diff setup for the rear axle

I know this is a subject that has been around before. But I wish someone would step up to make us some axle kits that we can unlock the rear. Also I am one who would like to see someone make a rear diff cover out of aluminum for us.

Not sure about a switchable diff lock but you can get aluminum diff covers from a number of vendors. I'm using an aluminum Poison Spider diff cover.

I'm going to do this upgrade and see how it goes. Who knows what might happen?

I did this mod for one guy some time ago, it seemed to work for him. I just used factory axles and drilled the hole for the cross pin at the proper location. It is not hard at all. I would say it should be done with a drill press at least though and use a quality drill bit. The axles are pretty hard and cheap-O drill bits are not going to cut it.

Hey Sr.Irie, do you remember what size drill bit you used for this project? Thanks bud,
Ernie

I am pretty sure it was a 48. I do not have a cross pin handy to make sure. I remember it was kind of between sizes, the 48 was tight 47 fit.

Do you remember where you picked up that diff cover at. I have been wanting to do away my stock plastic one and get alum. Does it help performance...No, does it make it look cooler YES haha!

Thanks bud, I think I just about have enough parts to start a new Hammer build. Going to be a modified BAJA BUG. Will probably start a thread next week.

Make sure you check my drill size if you are going to order one. Going off my memory can be dangerous.

Looking forward to your Baja build, been considering a Baja myself. I need to make up my mind on what I should do next. I have nothing going now that my Celica is done.

" Going off my memory can be dangerous." I can relate to that statement, believe me!!!!
I will check a pin size tomorrow. With all the VW you have at your place, you need at least one toy BAJA Bug!!!!!!

You could always get a ascender Bronco and have both.

For anyone doing this my memory was good this time. I just finished doing a set for joe007 and I piloted with a #48 then opened it up with the #47 and the cross pins fit as they should. But One thing that I did forget to mention was you must shorten the axle or there is not enough room for the center pin. Just make them a little proud of the side gears and there good.

Would like to thank Sr. Irie for making a open diff for the rear of my twin hammers. With Easter over and all my grandchild going back to Georgia and Idaho I finally installed the diff in my TH. I am still doing a little more wiring and cleaning things up on my truck. Will be trying it out this week. Gotta say Irie is very meticulous with his work.
