|  The old question...diff oil vs. grease
Just throwing this out there. Opinions on diff oil or grease. I've always used grease on the scx10, bully and CK. But the TH will be an all-around rig. Suggestions or hints welcomed.

Just keep things simple and use some quality grease. I'm not sure the diff is sealed in such a way that oil wouldn't leak or seep out of it.

Thick grease in mine, I suspect oil would eventually leak tho I haven't tried. Fill it up but don't fill it to the brim, you need some air space to allow for expansion and pressure changes at high speed.

If you drive fast then either is fine. If you plan to do a little crawling, diff oil is a good idea since you can "tune" the amount of slippage by using heavier / lighter oil. Currently I have both front and rear locked, but I have run with 125k diff oil when I thought I could make this rig a "go fast" unit. The diff worked fine but the truck definitely has speed limitations.

I guess we some clarification as to whether the OP asked to use oil or grease for lubrication (that's what I thought  ), or whether he was simply asking to use it inside the diff carrier to create some amount of resistance to provide drive to both axles....

From what I've read it's a sealed diff and will hold diff fluid. I'm rebuild my front diff and adding 500,000wt in a couple of days.

I ended up using a grease made by a bike parts company called Phil Wood (Phil Wood & Co.). Viscosity between the Associated 500K oil and the Phil Wood grease is less than 0.01@20/20C. I'll give it a try this weekend and see how it works out. This stuff works fantastic on high rpm parts like wheels on bikes so it should work well. |
