I attemted to color for my 8th grade ss teacher, (who new I was colorblind), and I got fussed at cause I had colored Abe Lincoln green and apricot, lol,

that is an awesome drawing,
"thumbsup" <to the student

Guess which one was done by a girl.;-)

Isn't the whole point of these projects, and school in general, to teach kids how to do things for themselves? Last year my grade 5 son had to do a heritage project. I urged him to do it on his great-grandfather who served in the Royal Navy in WWI. My grandfather was a very private man and never ever spoke about his war experience - never marched in a parade or bragged or expected praise for his service. He died in '69 so I thought this would be a great chance to tell his "untold story". My son agreed. BUT I ended up taking over the project and doing almost all the work. I saw it as MY project. WE got a 92 on it

This year he has a similar project but I decided that he's in grade six so he's old enough to do it himself. AND he did - with very little help from me. Guess what he got for his mark - 92.

This year we have a very hands off approach to my son's school work. We will help if he asks but we don't hover over him. He is doing excellent - has never even come close to failing a test in all his school years yet.

Kids have got to learn to be independent and doing their assignments for them doesn't help.

As for this poster - there is no denying there was parental assistance.

Just my 2 cents.

I find it sad you'd be willing to give a child a good grade to have her father do work. Thats like giving AIG bonuses out...praise the lazy CEO for anothers work.

In my school years if I copied an existing poster I would have been failed, not given an A. My parents would have helped me had I asked, but not done it for me.

Dezfan: while I do believe the entire global community owes our American soldiers for their acts in WWII, remember us Americans sat it out until they were involved. Had Pearl Harbor not been attacked there is little doubt we might have never entered. Very poor stratedgy by the Japanese forces to involve a large power who was content to watch. Maybe our allies are now just doing the same, sitting watching us until they feel the "attack" just as we did long ago.

I know I'm going to catch shite for this one but that poster about "having a date" with the gansters has to be commented on. If the US had been "on time" - and entered the war when most of the other Allied countries did, the conflict most likely woudl've ended much sooner.

I will not put on my flame resistant suit

edit - Looks like Binary Terror scooped me!!

Wow, I am kinda suprised at some of the responses this is getting. Yes kids have to learn to do things for themselves. I give them chances to do so everyday.

I kinda looked at this as a way to get everyone involved in their education. After all teachers can't do it alone we gotta have help from home. I agree that parents shouldn't do a students work for them but I didn't see a problem with them working together on this project.

I guess I was just glad to get a project this well done from a student with or without help. So many times students and parents do absolutely nothing and are happy to scrape by with a D or fail and make it up in summer school. Trust me they get their chances to fend for themselves I was just proud to see them exposed to something that they otherwise wouldn't have gotten into on their own.

Just a note to add I have gotten a few decent painting and some very well done essays turned in this morning.

Either I need to change some of my teaching philosophies or some of you guys should try teaching for a day or two.

I understand where you're comng from Keith. And I think that some of these guys should take you up on your offer;-)

I think we can all agree that times have changed, and, for the most part aren't for the better. Kids nowadays are not gettin the discipline they need at school OR at home. IMO, everything else trickles down from that.

Hell, I remember when I was in grade school...anyone else remember "bending over and touching your knee's"??? (no homo) For those that didn't get a chance to experience those glorious days, we used to get "paddled" if we acted a fool. And I can't speak for all of my other classmates, but I know at least for me, that if I got it at school I was gonna get it at home that night too.

You ever hear of any kids getting physically disciplined at school OR home today????? We've become so liberal in that area that it's rediculous...

I give just as much credit to teachers today as the soldiers they're talking about on those posters. It's like pulling teeth to get any of them to do anything & there's nothing you can do about it if they don't do anything.

You should bring them in as guest teachers. I think even one on one they wouldn't be able to do what you have done.
I know I couldn't but hey I'm only 22.
When I was in school we did the same thing but we had to do it from the other side... I did Japan

Why is Darth Vader watching me? :ror:

Beat me to it.

I used to have parents come into the shop with their kids for various projects.

"My son has a physics project to do and we really need an A on this."

I'd always hear it. Finally one day I responded with "We don't need an A, I've already passed physics."

It was amazing how many parents would bring their kids in and ask me for ideas for the kid's project.

The whole idea is for the kid to exercise their brain. Instead they turn to the parents who turned to me.

I actually had one parent ask "Can you build it for us?"

It got to the point that if I knew it was a school project I wouldn't help.

Well finally 3:05 is here and the kids are gone! Out of 98 students I only had 35 that didn't turn in a project. That is better than I was expecting. Here are another painting and poster that I thought was good.

2 days to spring break. I'm headed to the house.8)

Is English an elective at your school?

The don't teach English anymore. Its Language Arts.

English is more of a second language here. Most kids speak ebonics.:x

That is actually a student's attemp to copy an actual WWII poster. I have seen the original. I looked for it so I could post a link but couldn't find it.

63/98 = 64%; 1/3 of the students didn't do the project?
Do you teach at a Middle School/Jr. High?

i was wondering the same thing, and got bummed when he said that the quota met was higher than expected. what ever happened to the good old days... and consequences ?

" got your project done ? "
" nope. "
WHACK !!!!!!
.... and you thought your knuckles were just going to fall off and throw themselves in the trash can.

( i'm going to dumb it down a bit here, forgive me )
Kudos to you for bringing up such an important part of our history. especially where we are pretty setup in the rythmic path that brought us into the world war to begin with.
worldwide economic depression, and a few countries poking about trying to obtain the top spots... bam, we landed ourselfs in a war.
if for nothing else, the war was good for our economy.
perhaps we need another one ?
be sure to stress the average age of the population defending freedom... nineteen.
hats off to you and your students.
... and yes she was right.

Thanks for finding that Crunky.

Yeah guys its a city middle school. Its pretty sad. Kids don't care, parents don't care, as a teacher my hands are tied. No corporal punishment and the principal pretty tells us everyone has to pass because we have so many kids coming in for the next year. That was the same thing their 5th grade teachers were told so they just keep getting passed along. I find myself worrying about the kids who are trying to learn and just letting those who want to fail, fail. Don't get me wrong I work with all those who are willing to accept help but some of them just don't want it. Those who fail don't really fail they just get placed in the next grade.

The whole system is pretty messed up.:-(

And don't you just get all warm and fuzzy when you think that these are the people that will running things when we're seniors???

Every time I think of education nowadays I think of Carlos Mencia's "Not For The Easily Offended", where he talks about the school systems now and the lowering of standards to make everyone happy.
