Concord, NC (Sports Network) - Kasey Kahne signed a long-term contract with Hendrick Motorsports on Wednesday and will replace Mark Martin in the No. 5 Chevrolet in 2012.
Kahne informed Richard Petty Motorsports on Tuesday that he will not return as driver of the No. 9 Ford in 2011. He has driven the No.9 car since his Sprint Cup Series rookie season in 2004. His contract with RPM is up at the end of this year, and he intends to finish the season with the team. Kahne's plans for next year have yet to be determined.
After the first seven races this season, Kahne is 26th in points. His best finish so far is fourth, which came last month at Atlanta.
Last year, Kahne won at Sonoma, CA and gave Richard Petty his first trip to victory lane as a team owner in a decade, dating back to when John Andretti drove the famed Petty No. 43 car to a win in the 1999 spring race at Martinsville. Kahne also won the Labor Day weekend race at Atlanta.
"In Kasey, we saw an opportunity to cement a big piece of our future," said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. "He possesses incredible talent and a tremendous dedication to his craft, and we know he'll be a great fit within our company.
Last September, Martin signed a contract extension with Hendrick to drive the No. 5 car full time through the 2011 season. Martin, 51, is the oldest among the four Sprint Cup drivers at Hendrick.

Jeff Gordon has a lifetime contract with Hendrick, while Jimmie Johnson recently extended his agreement with the organization through the 2015 season, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. inked a deal for five years, starting in 2008.

I think for 2011 he will go to Stewart-Haas with backing from Hendrick. Since Stewart-Haas runs Hendrick cars anyways.

indeed. martin will be in a hendrick MS car for 2011.

i wonder if he takes the 9 and Budweiser name with him... he has had that number and sponsor since his outlaws days

Does this mean he'll still be making left turns?

:flipoff:

I've lost interest in NASCAR over the years. Heard that ditched the wing and went back to a spoiler on the new cars but have yet to see a race since to see how it's changed things.

I doubt he takes the number with him. Hendrick has run the 5 car longer than Kasey Kahne has been racing. Budweiser was a long time sponsor of the 25 car for Hendrick so there is a good chance that they sponsorship may go with him. He might run the 9 while at Stewart-Haas. I'm glad to see him go somewhere besides Petty. Petty is a dying company. Kahne is a good driver. He should do well at Hendrick.

Jason the cars drive about the same they just look more like stock cars with the spoiler back on.

the car owners own the numbers not the driver or Earnhardt jr would be the 8 not 88 now budwieser might be a different story as they are year to year right now

NASCAR has sucked since they made all the cars look alike. All cars should look like what is mass produced for the public to drive. With no limitations on what motors and Horse power you can run. Limiting the speeds has made chickens of all the newer drivers.

The older races were the best. IMO

NASCAR today makes me:lmao::lmao::lmao:

Really, it's been going downhill longer than that. Every time one manufacturer would get the most minute of advantage over the other makes NASCAR would change the rules mid-season to take the advantage away. I used to love NASCAR, but this homogenized, pasteurized, and processed version of it is quite boring. I still check NASCAR.com each week to see what transpired but I seldom watch the races any more and don't buy any memorabilia.

Agreed. Its lame. You could take all the aero parts off of them, make them run skinny tires, drop the speed 80-100 mph, and you'd have the same exact "exciting" race.

well.. i was raised on dirt oval. my father was the fire chief at a local 3/8's of a mile track. thats were i was introduced into racing... 360's and 410's was were it was at.

the outlaws would come into town a few times a year and thats when i became a fan of kahne's. now that hes in nascar, i followed...

so what are he cars running now... wings, fins, spoilers? i lost track:roll:

There is one key difference between NASCAR and the more grass roots racing. Sponsors.

There is big money in NASCAR because of its marketability. To keep all those high paying sponsors happy, they have to keep things on an even plain. To those sponsors, those cars and drivers are nothing more than high speed billboards.

Grass roots racing (dirt/circle/drag) have more sponsors that actually have something to do with automobiles and motorsports other than money to throw around.

budwieser WILL NOT go to Hendrick, Pespi is a major sponor for Hendrick, that is a big nono for Pepsi. They will not be associated with any adult beverage.

So it's like Affirmative Action for Motorsports. :ror:

Bingo!

That way nobody has to shell out any more money than they have to to stay competitive. If everyone is basically driving the same car with basically the same engine that all go about the same speed and it all revolves around a series of very specific and strict rules, nobody has to think real hard, no new technology has to be developed, and everybody can follow along.

Yep you are right about the Pepsi thing plus there dosnt seem to be any lack of sponser money around that place anyway

That's good news being a 48 fan. Got to support the home town driver. "thumbsup" Forget Pepsi, have Budwieser come over with Kasey, but put it back on Dale Jr.'s car and then all the Dale Jr. fans will be happy again. Now they can finally add another "8" to their tatoos that are Budwieser themed. :twisted:

IIRC wasn't it more like ;

"We can't let a manufacturer other than GM dominate so let's create a rule that makes what Ford and Chrysler are doing illegal."

"thumbsup"
