fire dept in tenn lets house burn down cuz ownwer forgot to pay $75 annual fee

What I don't understand is why the $75 isn't collected from all property owners (without the option to decline service) via the municipal tax system.
The fire dept then becomes a municipal, not city service. That's how it works here in my neck of the woods.

And since the golf course was less than a mile away from the burning home, he could a two for one out of that

They new that they had to pay, and they didn't. then when they are up chit creek they all of the sudden have more $ than what they had to pay when it was due

I agree with Jason here 100%. I have been in that fire departments shoes when i was a full time fireman. I didnt let the house burn instead put it out and charged them $1500 in incident fines and until it was payed they could'nt enter the residents. It was payed rather fast after that. Yes, it was a little extreme to let the house burn but that department is funded by that $75 a year and they depend on that. Alot of fire departments are not icorpirated in the united states meaning they are not government funded like most folks think. With that said I bet there will not be anymore late fees or unpaid fees in that town. Maybe this example will teach people the real meaning of supportin your local fire and police departments that are in areas such as this little place.

Then perhaps if I happen to be driving through that community and get into an accident that traps me in my vehicle, but otherwise do anything to injure me. I should just be left trapped in there since I wouldn't have paid that $75 either?

If the accident doesn't happen in the city or county where you pay taxes it's likely you'll get billed for whatever emergency services are needed to respond to your accident. I wrecked a truck with a load of cattle on back in '99 and my insurance had to pay for fire (to clean up the diesel), ambulance (even though it wasn't needed) and the brand inspector.
I think the FD did the right thing here. No pay, no service. If they let these guys get by not paying then how many of their neighbors would pay next year? If you go to a boobie bar you have to buy a drink, you can't sit there not drinking because the guy next to you bought his.

I don't think I've lost sight. If I was paying the $75 year after year just in case I needed the FD and the people across the road weren't and the FD responded just the same I would probably quit paying, and I imagine others would also. They hadn't payed for two years, so what are the chances of them paying an incident fee for the FD showing up?
In a way the $75 was kind of like insurance. If they didn't pay their insurance premiums do you think they'd just cut them a check anyways if their house burned down? After all, other people had access to the insurance and payed so the insurance should just be available to everyone, right?

Nobody has lost site of anything. Maybe we're just tired of people expecting something for nothing. Its just like the welfare system. Instead of using welfare as a means to get through a rough time and get back your feet, most people abuse it and then expect more and more and more.
Do you personally know these people? Do you know what kind of people they were? Were they good neighbors...the type of people to help out people in the community? Or were they white trash, welfare pieces of shlt that made enemies throughout the town? Were they the type to rebel against the $50 fee (and probably other responsibilities as well)? Were they the type to start bar fights, and cause trouble?
Unless you live in the town and know these people personally, it's hard to judge them or the fire dept/fire cheif.

The people in NYC payed taxes that funded the FD and these guys were supposed to pay an annual fee the help fund their FD, that they didn't pay for two years.

well then shouldnt something else be done then..levy yia property tax..etc..not that hard to do..up here we all pay through our property taxes and such..NO one is denied service, i,m far from saying its perfect up here..but looking better by the minute
as for this poor underfunded fire company..seems to me they wouyld of gained some economic benefit by putting out the fire and being paid a much larger amount then the 75 buck fee,..seems like a NO BRAINER:roll: gee you think they may need better equipment..but no this is about following rules like a bunch of robots..some of y,all cant see the forest through the trees ..expain to me how i,m wrong..off to work now..got bills to pay..lol
