Ok, here is where I need SVT923 sitting by my side. I need his humor and mastery of words!!! But since it's a long way from Oregon to The Carolina's I don't think that's going to happen!"thumbsup"

As most of you already know I like to step out of the box a little and can't leave anything stock! Knowing this my good friends Bob and Doug commissioned me to build a "King Richard" truck for the "Nasty-Car Truck crawling Series" starting next spring. So right off the bat I knew that My good friend Katan at SSD, a race truck chassis manufacturing company in England would help with the chassis and axle design. Being who they are and just a little off the deep end the brothers wanted to use a Jeep Nukizer body :lmao::lmao::lmao:??? Hey, as long as their money is good who am I to question? I like a good challenge! "thumbsup"
So here are a couple ideas I have for design.

1. I want to install a portal axle in the rear. Katan is helping me with that. He sent me some newly design alum axle tubes, portal housings/covers and a diamond gear housing (because I will need to flip the housing because of the 2 gear portals) I will have a math professor at Oregon crunch the numbers for me to see what % of overdrive I will wind up with. More on that later.

2. The brothers hired my wife Marcia to design and cut stencils for the numbers and sponsor decals. So she went to work on her Brothers Design and Cut.

3. It's going to be interesting massaging the body to look like a Nasty-Car truck body. Any suggestions are welcome from you Nasty-Car Truck fans !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any Ideas on how to proceed with this build are welcome. These guys are driving me crazy with what they want, and I told them that I can't in anyway make all of it happen.
So there you have it, a start of a new build for Codyboy!! At 70, I don't know how many more of these I have in me! :roll::roll:

The portal parts from Katan (SSD) feel very good, and it was a snap assembling them, everything spins soooooo smooth."thumbsup"
The start to the front axle, going with the overdrive gears in the front.



Even thought the SSD unis are a great design I still wanted to clearance them a little.



Next this is how I like to break the unis in. some WD-40 and graphite powder. and then chuck them up in the lathe to work the powder into the joints.



So I finished up the front axle and I must say I'm not sure what all the complaining is about with the SSD overdrive gears. I used no shims in the Trail King housing and assembled, with about 2 minutes spinning with the drill, it is as smooth as butter! "thumbsup"

Thanks, I think SSD is one of our best supporters in this hobby right now! I debated on getting a Capra, but I really decided that Katan at SSD deserves my support over Axial JMO! "thumbsup"

Well the Mckenzie brothers showed up at the shop today and I can see I'm going to have some challenges giving them what they want!
Here is Zeke (our mechanic) answering some questions about the axles.



Tape face in the back ground is getting a kick out of this!



They aren't sure they like the idea of the portal axle in the rear??? Zeke is trying to explain the over drive ratio advantage we will be getting to the front wheels. But as soon as he started with the math their eyes glazed over and the lid to the ice chest came off! ;-) OH boy!

So Zeke brought out our secretary Hanna to try and explain the math, Big mistake! This is the first time the boy saw her, and they did take notice. So much so that do you see the wrench in her hand.:lmao::lmao:





Now Zeke is wondering if bringing her out was a good idea? It seems she may be a distraction. Notice tapes face, he is just about rolling out of his chair laughing. I think he and the brothers are on their third beer.



Zeke is explaining to Hanna that it might be best if she went back to the office! Of course he was very diplomatic in doing it. :lmao::lmao:



More tomorrow maybe. I need to make a trip to Arizona to check out a Nukizer body."thumbsup"

I'm committed to sharing all my little dumb tricks with everyone. Part of trying to pass what I've learned forward. I will be the first to admit that I'm one of the worst drivers out there so hopefully I pass none of those skills forward, but I think I can home brew a descent truck. 8)

Ok, moving on. Todays discussion is about the cool SSD tranny/t-case. All I can say is WOW, what a nice design.
The brothers like the way it sits down low in the chassis! But they are wondering about the Horsepower that the Holmes brushed motor is going to put out??? I tried to convince them that the 5 pole motor is one of the best. They want a brushless motor, maybe a Holmes 2700kv puller stubby. Any thoughts from some of you?

So the brothers and I have been talking with a good friend about doing some 3D work for us and proud to welcome HumboldtEF to the team.
Casey is becoming a great designer and is going to help us with some custom parts. So a few photos I sent to him for a new thingamajiggy!
You'll have to wait until later to see what it will look like.

Good choice on the new project, I dont think it will disappoint! I too wish I was a funny as SVT923!

Heres a peak at the battery tray design. Looks like the mount for the pro axles will work on the portal axles with a little modification. I made up a new rear crossmember that should provide the extra height required.

Thank you Youngman ;-) I usually make a couple trips a month up to Kelly's (Lunsford) to talk tiny trucks and solve all the worldly problems. Maybe we can get together on one of those trips. "thumbsup"

A couple new things to post today.

Zeke is checking the difference in the height of the front and rear shocks to see how much the portals are raising the chassis in the rear.





This will show us how much we need to extend some new rear shock towers.

So to the lay-out and soldering tables.
When I want the bends to be very exact I score my tubing or rod with a cut off wheel in the Dremel.


Soldering on some mounting tabs.



And U shaped mounting brackets.



The raw shock towers are test fitted before going the paint booth.



I've posted this process in some of my other builds, but I will post up again how I paint and cure most all my manufactured tube and rod parts.

I use high temp engine paint and cure It in a old BBQ. 400 degrees for 30 minutes and 300 degrees for another 15 minutes.





I will give them a couple hours and then mount them.

This thing is looking great! I will definitely be keeping an eye on this build! Nothing more entertaining and inspiring then a good ol Codyboy build!!! I like the notching the tube for exact bends trick. I've been thinking of making my own shock towers for my Trx. That will help me allot. Keep up the great work brother! "thumbsup"
