Anybody Deep Fry Turkey?

I love deep fried turkey, the taste is great, it takes hardly any time compared to other methods and its a good rreason to go outside and consume beverages.

Most fryers have measuring lines on them that will keep you from overfulling them w/ oil. I recommend getting a good fryer not the cheapest one available. I got a good one from Lowes a few years ago and it rocks, cooked a 27lb bird in it for my first time and it came out great. It only recommends sub 20lb birds but I don't pay attention to directions.

Like CHUD said, make sure the bird is thawed completly or you can cause a fire, massive spill of boiling oil, injury, and ruin the bird. Do not deep fry a frozen bird or you will learn a lesson you won't forget. I also hang my bird for an hour or 2 (on an engine hoist =P) to allow any water and other fluids to run out and prevent possible extreme oil spattering of my face, boiling oil does not get along w/ water.

I also recommend a good meat thermometer, the ones w/ the kits are good for measuring oil temps but not super accurate when measuring meat temps.

Calculate your cook time to weight ratio carefully, I forget the formula, I look it up every
year.

If cooked properly, you will not have a Griswold bird, it will be a juicy succulent hunk of poultry. Make sure you have a comfy place to nap afterwards.
