Hey all,

I've decided I'm going to build my first 1.9 scaler. Although this is my first attempt at a scale RC truck, I am no stranger to building and fabricating since I was awarded the 2003 TamiyCon Master Modeler for my McLaren MP4/6 F1 car. After winning that award, I pretty much retired from model building since I accomplished my goal....and it's time to dust off the 'ole modeling tools, open up my wallet and see what I can do with a brand new SCX10 Trail Honcho converted to a Ford F250 truggy.

I'm using the Proline body of course.

I'm taking my time with this project, but I do hope to have fairly regular updates. Ultimately, this may end up being a shelf queen if it turns out as good as I hope, but that is yet to be determined! For now, I'll leave the motor and electronics stock (except servo) until I figure out if it will actually be used!

There's really no budget, so pretty much everything will be upgraded.

I have the body cleaned up, but will not paint until nearly the very end to ensure everything is fitting perfectly. Not sure which way I will go with the paint job, but it will likely be an OEM paint job style, whether it's a two tone King Ranch or a single tone OEM color.

I may also end up fabricating a new bed/floor for the rear truggy section.

Here's what I'm thinking for now....

VP axles housing (Currie?) and all the bit's that go with it.
Shocks
Wheels and tires. I want to keep the stock width for scale appearance, so I have to find a similar offset wheel. Slightly larger tires too.
Bumper(s)
Lights
Nerf Bars
Frame mounted upgraded servo
VP suspension/steering links
MIP driveshafts
FI Spools
Upgraded axles
Scale aluminum diamond plate
Frame upgrades (shock hoops, cross members, etc.)

I know there will be more to add to this list, but it's a start. Now I just have to start getting the parts purchased.

I'm open to suggestions and recommendations.

Here's where I'm at now:

Good grief.... does anyone have full selection of VP parts that are actually in stock? This may take longer than I thought!!!

Don't make it a dually. I hate it when dually's are lifted and have big tires... they look so ghey.

Keep it a single rear wheel setup. "thumbsup"

I appreciate your opinion and will certainly consider what you say....I'm on the fence with the dually idea. I guess if I was going with smaller tires that resemble real 1:1 style dually set-up, it would look more appropriate. From what I have looked into, I think I'm going to go with the 1.9 PitBull tires and I agree, may look a little goofy with duals.

What about a Tamiya F-250 hardbody rather than the lexan? The hardbody would be a nice touch if ur thinking about a shelf queen.

I did consider that body, but I prefer the the newer SD body style. My profession is retrofitting Ford F150 and Super Duty headlights and I wanted something that I can sort of represent my business product.....not that I am going to put bi-xenon HID projectors into the truck though!!!!

Vanquish updated their site and has the Currie Axles and other parts I wanted in stock, including a full set of 1.9 Method Race Wheels. Can't wait for this order to get in so I can continue this build.

I saw the post from The Scale Shop with their new high clearance SCX frame; I may have to try that out too.

This looks like it is going to be an awesome project. Where are you located in BC? I am in Victoria. I am trying to find some people to connect with in the hobby.
Thanks

Thanxs islandcrawler72....I'm also in Victoria (Maplewood area). For sure, one day we should connect. There's also a Victoria 4x4 Facebook page that I just recently joined hoping to do the same.

Picked up a little bling for the wheel wells today at the LHS. I went with the 110mm King Reservoir shocks because I wanted a bit more height. I will be ordering the Gear Head multi-position upper shock mounts so that I can fine tune the height and angle of the shocks to work with the body. My objective is too create more suspension travel and not have to trim the body fender openings. With these shocks, I definitely get more suspension travel and articulation without the frame bottoming out. I will also pick up the King spring assortment to further tune the shocks according to the front and rear weight of the truck once it's near completion. I'm not overly concerned with the slightly higher body because of the metal VP Currie axles and Method Race wheels that will add a significant amount of weight down low. I kinda guessed with the SLW wheel hubs, hopefully the offset works out. Gotta get me some tires ordered up now!

Also picked up a set of SCX10 stainless steel bolts and screws kit.

With all of the above, plus the VP order, the whole driveline and suspension will be tricked out.

Some more progress with all the VP parts. Everything is just mocked together for test fitting, suspension bind/tuning and arrival of further parts for the guts of the Currie axles.

If you've never had the privilege of building a pair of VP Currie axles, I highly recommend it....these are absolute pieces of mechanical art.

I did have the Panhard and CMS set-up bolted up, but decided to go axle mounted servo for now, since I didn't realize a three link conversion is required for the front links for full suspension travel.

Wow...a work of art!! Too bad it wasnt Yota bodied(;
Man that'd be tits for me....not a fan of blue oval myself but hey it's your build and its what you like! Lookin good though

Thanxs guys....I'm a Ford guy!

While waiting for parts to arrive, I decided to get the electronics sorted out. For now, everything is just mocked up, but I think this is how it will be. Because I have so much suspension travel, the axle mounted servo needed space to come up thru the frame. I ended up mounting the the receiver box on the Axial metal servo plate, which aligned perfectly with the raised supports. I wanted to keep the ESC up high and angled to eliminate and moisture build up. As a bonus, the air created by the motor fan looks like it will circulate against the ESC. The light weight of the higher mounted electrical components won't effect the CG, since there will be lots of weight down low. I also wanted to eliminate any electronics from being seen thru the front wheel wells.

If I decide to go with the CMS, it's an easy change since the whole chassis front end is cleared out.

Thoughts?

I'm excited to see this build progress. Love the body choice.
