Braving the Element

This is turning into a slower build... hopefully not as slow as my 2yr+ Bomber!
Ordered VS410 chassis, GS01 bumper, steel balls and shock bushings.
(RPP has a 15% off sale for the next couple days!)
Have new SSD Pro44 axles in hand.
Hmmm... naming it will be confusing.

Probably just call it "The Mongrel" and be done with it...
Or - to be nicer, "Cross-Breed", or "Mutt".

The question remains - will it ever get cool enough outside for me to drive it while it's mostly stock?

Actually, this rig will have parts from nearly everyone, as the SSD axles have Axial gears and universals in them.
I will likely try to come up with a different body later - so far I have considered several options.
Initially (before I even bought it) I just wanted to stick a MST JP1 body on it (heh, another R/C brand), then I thought of cutting the cab back and bed off of my uncut and unpainted Proline GMC Topkick in the super-long HPI Savage XL version and fabbing up a Lexan replacement backside for the cab, and then attaching the Proline back half-cage. It would be the exact same length as the Enduro cab, if cut.
However, it has the strangest problem - TINY wheel wells, even if I cut off the the fender flares. I could possibly hack the quarter panels up big-time, and make something really strange out of it... but I dunno. It's an annoying design in many ways, was never scaled properly to cover crawler tires - just to have monster truck suspension arms poking through the fender holes!
Thought about doing the same thing to a Proline Jeep 4-door Unlimited Rubicon - sectioning it to be just a cab with a vertical back wall made of the back end, once again with the Proline cage attached. Would need to measure that.
Or, could get "inclusive" again - and bring in another R/C player - the Redcat Scout II body, buy the clear one and do NOT use those hideous flares - it's got about .4" longer WB...
Too bad I never liked the HPI Toyota FJ Cruiser... it's not solid axle IRL, anyway.

I have been thinking about picking up the Redcat Scout body. I like the looks of them with the top cut off with some sort of roll bar. I think the rear end needs bobbed a little too!

So, with absolutely perfect timing, Harley finally released his video where he chassis-swaps the VS410 Vanquish chassis under the Enduro transmission - only a few minor mods needed, not actually for the transmission but for the shocks and Panhard bar - of which the latter shouldn't be an issue for me since I'll be using the SSD Pro44 axles without BTA steering:

I will, however, be trying a different solution for the front shock adjustment rings rubbing the VS410 shock mounts... I do like the way he re-used the Enduro rear shock mounts and got some angle to the rear shocks!

I saw this video as well. Looks like a cool swap. I'm anxious to see what kind of performance gains there are by doing this. Mike had mentioned how the enduro chassis is set up very similar almost identical to the vs410. Keep us posted

Ordered a Mamba Micro X Crawler Edition ESC, HH Stubby PP 2700kv brushless motor, and a HeyOK NoBrainer BEC...
And an Element decal sheet, a basic Team AE lighting kit, and a HH bypass harness.

Oh, I did originally have a ton more parts in my cart at multiple sites... "thumbsup"
Then, I decided to back off and try out a slightly lower-key setup.
Was going to get more metal parts and a bit of brass - then figured it was heavy enough with the metal SSD axle tubes...
As far as the paint job is concerned, looks like I'll be slathering this thin RTR body with "sponsorship" decals - since so many brands are involved in the build, I'll have nearly every square inch covered!
I'm going to stick to black and white decals only, to keep it from getting too ugly.
We'll see how long the body holds up, and then I'll have another choice to make - what to replace it with - and who knows, I may even become more enamored of it and get the supposedly thicker clear version.

If you still want to add some colour and not just sponsor decals, you can use adhesiv foil. I am using oracal foil (ORACAL® 751C High Performance Cast). Works pretty well and there are many different colors available.

A re-think of my plans has been rattling around in my head - likely keeping it mostly an "Enduro" than a mix, got the hard parts and a few Factory Team bits and will probably just use those for now.
Realized that all the other stuff I picked up will basically equal yet another rig - so those parts will be set aside for a later hybrid Vanquish/SSD/??? build - still might use the Element transmission.
These things happen, I guess!
I do too much building in my head, need to find time for actual physical assembly...

Trying to decide whether to start with the kit, or pony up for the new Trailwalker and start hacking. It’s great to see Element iterating so quickly on this rig.
My worst was my Bomber, I bought a kit version more than 3 years ago, took about 2 years to search out upgrades and then build it...

Still have only assembled axles and transmission on number 2!
It is not being built on the Axial Bomber tube chassis/frame...;-)

Installed another wheelset, thinking while I run it nearly stock, I will likely keep these on to make it more challenging and also not need to trim all the fender flares off - with the utility bed it makes it look like a work truck...
Swapped bumper mounts front to rear, used G-Made GS01 front bumper (a popular choice for good reason, IMHO) and then installed the Vanquish VS4-10 front bumper in the rear lined up just under the utility bed - will provide the back end more protection, as I was worried about running it without any.
Obviously need to paint and install the lexan bed! Also need to decide on how to detail the cab. Probably going to keep things simple.
This time it's Boom Racing Narrow 21mm Badass Classic 16-hole Steel & CNC Aluminum wheels w/Choodoo (Injora) KLR M/T X 1.9x1.3x4.19 tires:
