Brazing

I was thinking mapp gas but some people said it wouldnt get hot enough.

I use a Mapp gas torch to braze, it has a temp. high enough to melt the filler material but not enough to melt the parent metal, works just fine.

hey fellas, couple questions. would you be able to use a high-watt soldering iron to do this? second, if so where would be the best place to get one, and last, where do you get silver solder from?

Safty-silv 56 melts @ 1145 F/618 C. So you will need to heat the parent metal to this temp. Mapp gas torch with a 'swirl' tip is rated at 3600 F/1980 C. A good quality 80W soldering iron will get you about 850 F.
Your best bet would be to find a local welding supply shop, they usually stock all you need for brazing.

ok so i went to home depot and bought the oxy/mapp gas torch to practice braizing. any one else use this setup? im starting to get the hang of it, but by the time i get going, the oxygen runs out. i burn through 4 cans of O2 before i finish a can a of mapp. is that normal?

Yup, same problem after about a dozen oxy cans, I got pissed and bought the Bernzomatic TS 4000 that uses only Mapp gas with a swirl tip, works ok for me so far, although it takes a little longer to melt the brazing wire.

Make sure it's made for MAPP gas. There are several different types of heads. Assuming it is, yes, that will work, although I much prefer mine with the autoignitor button on it. Complete pain in the ass to have to constantly light your torch when you do as much brazing as I do "thumbsup"

It would just take a little longer than brake line to heat up but will work.

for that, I would use an Oxy/acy torch... You can do it with MAPP gas, but it would take a little while to heat up.

i use a piece of 12x4 1/4 thick piece of steel, Home Depot has them for a couple bucks. if you get a couple welder magnets they help hold the pieces stable and up from the plate.
