Cutting a motor commutator & motor tweaks

I'm having fun. Nice relaxing Sunday afternoon, pound of bacon in me, cutting comms and having a few beers. :mrgreen:

I'm much more relaxed cutting the cheap motors for sure. I warmed up with a quickie cut on a beat 35 turn Integy before hitting that Reedy.

In the second picture, look how crappy the winds are wound! Wow!

Just an old blue can motor. I think it was a putnam motor.

Glad you posted a pic of that. Good comparison from a cheap built motor to a Top Handwound motor.

It does, I got a feeling with crawling growing as much as it is learning to maintain and rebuild motors is gonna be a have too. As soon as vendors get good motors on hand they sell out quick. Snooze ya loose.

I guess we(crawlers) are the biggest market now for brushed stuff. Brushless has pretty much taken over the racing side. Not many manufacturers are fooling with brushed stuff now. Maybe one day the racing side will get some nostalgia classes going and get more manufacturers back into brushed stuff. Probably will not happen thought.

Quick question for you motor guru's. I scored 4 fantom Jesse robbers edition motors today for 5 bucks a pop. 3 of them are uncut 1 was cut once. The endbells on these are amazing. So anyway on to the question. I want to find some 9 or 10 mm coms to handwind. These come with 7mm com. Can i use the bigger com with these endbells? Or should i just wind the coms that i have with these motors?

With an entire armature assembly. More or less one piece.

well i pulled all 4 out and they are not all jesse edition but they have other names on them. They all have the same endbell and look to be the same. One is an 8x1 12x2 14x2 10x1 and a 10x2. Also the guy that i got these from is selling a nice cobra pro 2000 lathe with diamond bit for cheap. If anyone is interested. I do not know him well but the lathe looked like new and i have his number.

The pattern wind arms are really nice and always ran well in touring and 12th scale and used the top cans for a long time. I tried a top can and endbell on a comp rig for a while but it was hard to find a brush/spring combo that really worked for me and the brush shunts snagged a rock on occasion. I think they would be great in a scaler though. I may have to dig that mod motor case out and do some tinkering...

Just done one of these tricks, The 5v leg runs the lathes just right. Plus I hate charging batteries to run a lathe.
