Cutting a motor commutator & motor tweaks

smells toxic :ror:

Didnt work,...........

Big Jim said cook em at 375 for 15 min......I did that
says the magnets will just push right out after they cool down.

I guess I'll have to trry the acetone

The older glues worked for that.....not so much the newer glue.

Acetone usually works, though you may need to try something stronger like MEK....

If you don't care about the looks of the can, I just use a little torch.......heat and remove.....

Curious, why are you removing the magnets?

I want to make a few quad magnet cans

Be careful cutting them.......they often will break from being so brittle....not to mention, if you are cutting TDK magnets, they are technically a doped magnet.....meaning they are spiked with rare earth particles (at least thats what Novak claimed) which are very toxic. Where a mask and sealed goggles.

I remember Jim told me he was making the original KR, he cut magnets for it himself. Stuff didn't go so well, as besides failures he said it took one whole magnet just to make one segment of a pole......so 4 full magnets to make the 4 pieces of 4 mag motor.

Thanks for the saftey tips"thumbsup"

I wasnt planning on it taking more magnets than what is in the can.

I was prepared for a screw up or 2
I only need 1 silver can,2 prefered.

I figured I would practice on the blue cans, and by time I did it a few times I'd have it down.

I'm planning on using a engraver to scribe a line, then use a bandsaw with a
diamond blade, probably wit running water to keep dust down and cutting area clean.

I wonder why you cant use bothe sides of the cut magnets?

It's not that you cannot, Jim just said typically one side would shatter.....

I wonder if cutting them like they were slate would work better.....more of a grind than a cut......

I was never able to successfully cut the magnets both times I tried making 4 magnet cans back in the day. Cutting them like they were slate would probably work a whole lot better. I would end up shattering them either at the very beginning of the cut or not till the very end, which sucked. Got my hopes all up and then "crack"... I gave up and went back to playing with the air gap on 2 magnet cans right before I gave up racing.

I use to soak the old Epics in acetone, I didnt like the oven idea because heat kills magnets. Plus once they're hot they get brittle so trying to tap them out of a can I would tend to crack or shatter them.

If you know someone with a Zapper you could have them do that after theyre redone. In TC and Oval racing we use to rezap them after every run, motors just never felt the same once they got hot.

I'm trying to score a zapper off of an old carpet racing buddy... He's zapped a ton of cans for me in the past couple of months, but he doesnt want to come off of it for some reason.

Hmmm.I have a zapper,so I wasnt to conserned about the heat. But I dont want to make them any more prone to damage/brittle if I can help it.

If JIm was heating them, maybe they was breaking from getting brittle??
If I can soak them, and get them out without making them brittle than thats
what I'll try.

Soo,how long would you soak them, and any acetone should work in theory right.

and whats MEK?

ya wish I never gave mine up  hated luggin it around but it was one of the few that actually worked and paid for itself at big races.

This is the best thread on RCC...hands down!!

So I had to spend a little money
motors004.jpg

Cut some copper
motors005.jpg

Then I built a couple arms - 35T
motors006.jpg

40T - Double
motors007.jpg

Both arm WORKED!! I was shocked...The 40 Double probably needs more copper - bigger wire

Nasty stuff that causes cancer in California. I'd actually start with that stuff, Acetone might be a waste of money. You can get MEK at Lowes, Home Depot, etc...
Yeppers....MEK = Methyl Ethyl Ketone (IIRC)......works great, but really, really bad for you. Use in a well ventilated area and/or use a charcoal respirator.
I believe it attacks the liver, not cancerous.....
