Dasher's Frogger build "Boris"

Porsche crawling...that is definitely a new one! Hahaha.

Nice one Dasher. I bet you will really see the stability shine once you install some Razors out back, as to get your lower links more triangulated.

Yeh, Speed bumps can be a challenge.

Working on getting some Razors (or making something similar).

Having tempted fate by saying Boris can stay as he is for a while, I spotted KOM's quick fix of a small addition of toe out. Now getting a similr angle for both wheels when on lock.

Boris finally got his hind legs up a little, thanks to some Razors. (Thanks NorZepal:)). This allows for much more triangulation of the rear lower links and it's much more stable now. It seems more flexible too.

Boris has remained relatively unchanged for a while as parts have been accumulated for his stablemate "Eric", the Poison Frog. Eric is spending longer as a tadpole than originally planned and so Boris has been treated to some well earned new bits.

After a bit of measuring, playing with different rod ends and using Eric's PD legs for fitting out I decided that a set of four rear PD Frogs legs and some Traxxas 5347 4mm ends would set Boris up nicely. Luckily Casey had enough legs to spare!

Boris sits much better on these legs. They've also allowed for a little more triangulation at the from. Rear skid height is up by 4mm too. I beginning to think that I could also run slightly heavier springs as, although the Losi golds allow for really smooth articulation, they don't hold the chassis weight too well.

Sadly the legs don't allow me to get the front shocks inboard - biggest restriction here though is the size of the Rooster esc.

having given him new legs, Boris can also look forwards to some Gunner pins and Toobs in the near future as they too have been sat in the box a while (why is it that when you have a set of pins waiting, the old ones never break)?

So here's what he looks like now and if you're still running your OG Frogger, I strongly recommend you chase Casey for these legs before he sells out (unless of course he's thinking of using the same length legs for his MOA project).

Awesome Dasher ! I want to do the same to "Litoria xanthomera" (http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/showthread.php?t=307835). Its amazing how the Media here says the economy is getting better. But, my wallet is getting thinner. I need to hook up with Casey for a purchase but, trying to complete both builds is a challenge.
It looks great and with out question performs even better. "thumbsup"

I agree. I decided that, for not much outlay, I could take Boris quite a bit further. The biggest issues have always been (i) stand over height and (ii) popping out the standard 3mm Axial ends. That's not to say that other things can't be improved - BTA would help the steering lock to lock and I've still to resolve the outboarded front shocks. Up-ending the Losis doesn't help - even the set of axial shocks that I have with end cap mods won't go in there - the real issue is the size of the rooster esc.

The PD will be a completely different build, like you I want to have a high spec from the off, but budget restrictions means that it will have to wait.

Boris crawls well though and gives me time on the rock that a part built PD can't! - He's ungrateful though - having just popped a Turnigy battery and a steering servo today!

After much fiddling and adjusting, the Frog's legs have finally allowed me to bring about what I was looking for all the time - inboarding the front shocks. I may eventually move the Rooster, but the only way is up, and I don't want to raise the cog (an fxr will fit nicely though)!

Got another few degrees of steering out of it now, the tyres don't play on the springs anymore, stability has improved and climb over ability has improved too,

Not done the beef toobs yet - pins still not broke! (obviously not trying hard enough.

This is where Boris is at now.

AWESOME ! Just chatted with Casey this morning and ordered a set of Frog Legz. I am stoked, Boris looks great ! "Litoria" is all HOT and Bothered by Boris's great legz, she needed a set. :lmao:

You won't regret it- Boris is a changed frog!
We even had a California sunshine day to play out in! 25C!!! - at a weekend!!
Seriiously, the legz have brought about a marked improvement in the old frog. I always knew that I had to inboard the front shocks. Well pleased, glad you like it!

It's a cheap upgrade too (not much more than the aluminium cr*p that axial sell.

Still think that I may have to do something about the drive angle - either clocked 'c's or longer upper links, but for the time being it's good. Toobs and pins next week!

Boris is getting a bit of attention after a year when I just ran him in the same trim and set up. He's acquired on of Duuuuuuuude's D links and this has enabled the use of longer rear uppers - something that has been needed for a while. Initially, yesterday, they were mounted so that the link was above the axle. After running it yesterday afternoon it was flipped over so that the links are under the plate - it's much better this way. The real reason for changing things around on Boris was to get some link making practice in before cutting and shaping for the Poison Dart - which will also have Duuuuuuude's D link.

Rear axle control on the Frogger has been markedly improved by the use of longer uppers and reduced triangulation. The Frogger chassis is not the last word in sophistication, it's actually very similar to stock in terms of mounting positions available, but it does actually perform very well once carefully set up. It's been a good chassis to learn about how a crawler actually works!

The OG Frogger has done me proud. It's had more tweaks recently. If you're tempted to make your own links (it is worth it), and you go with 4mm ends then use the 8mm Delrin stock on both uppers and lowers. I thought that I could get away with 6mm on the uppers, and you can with 3mm hardware, but with the 4mm you need to use 8mm rod. I've just swapped mine out after bending the link at the rod end. I've also gone for a delrin tie rod too, again in 8mm - this way you can shave it to take in the pumpkin without losing to much strength.
I'm on a Poison Dart build at the moment - it has been 2 years in the making but the idea was always to do it whilst keeping the Frogger. Looks like I will manage to do this now. Boris has just got some nice new wheels and I took the opportunity to swap the front tyres to Sedonas, so he's now running Sedonas out front and Rovers at the rear. The PD will be the same.
I see that you have plenty of rock to play on in North Staffs!

Looking forward to some new wheels on this beast, It seems so long ago that Casey and I were bouncing skype messages back and forward designing this chassis

Hi Highlucks
I'll post images up some up later. It's amazing just how far this OG Frogger can go. I'm currently trying to work out how the get the weight from the wheels to the knuckle - these 3 Racing knuckles are a strange shape. The other issue is that this OG chassis likes a lot of weight at the wheels - more than is easily achieved using knuckle weights but I shall experiment over time. I suppose that eventually I shall go the XR10 Chubs, knuckles and delrin tubes route, but not yet - and again this chassis wide, and therefore only a limited amount of steering can be gained. I like this little beast and glad that I didn't break it down to form the PD. It's amazing that 2 years on, it is very "old skool"! The PD is a different question of course - the build has started off very similar to the OG but the possibilities are much greater!

The 6mm delrin uppers just weren't strong enough so Boris now has new ones in 8mm. Whilst he was undergoing surgery I cut and sculpted a steering link too.

He also has new wheels - from Mayhem Engineering, Nice solid Old Skool ones not these weight weenie types! The rings came as a gift courtesy of AtomicMods - you if you're reading then many thanks - as you can see -they are mounted!

I'm sorting parts for the Poison Dart build that is ongoing (long. slow, build) and had set today aside to work on shock cap mods. As I had Boris out to do some measuring, I took a second look at him and decided that the Losi 4" on the front would go nicely on the PD, and in return Boris could have some Traxxas Big Bores up front, modded to 4" with the Jato ends. I'm not going the Losi Mini T spring route and instead am using the Associated springs. I've also modded the Traxxas cup by fabbing a small delrin inner to hold the spring in place - this has been fixed in place with cyano. I then took off the original lip.

So this is where he's at now. No excuse for going AXR10 now as I've made room for the increased steering angle. It can wait a while though! PD build to do first. New Sedonas up front too (his old Rovers are going on the rear of the PD).

This one has the Hot Racing C Hubs on it and 3 Racing Knuckles and CVD. But, no, I've snapped nothing on it at all. The CVD has Gunnar's pins in it , as do the hexes. The axle also has Gunnar's Beef Toobs in. Hub is clocked, but only a few degrees - so I have drilled it but not noticed a weakness.

I do have the Axial alloy C Hubs on the Poison Dart axles, but they haven't turned a wheel yet.

£150 was a killer price - has that got alloy steering hardware on it too? (I want some to eventually create the AXR-10 axle mod).
