Because they felt it was a story of fulfillment of OT prophecy.
Why did it take so long? Because it took a while to gain popularity, which came once Constantine converted to the new religion called Christianity and commissioned the actual compilation and creation of the NT.

The old test. books of the bible were for when we lived under law.
The new test. is for us now that will live under grace .
After Jesus was sacrificed to pay for our sins.
So it was a "new chapter" in Gods reign? Kinda like the Book of Mormon?

There are several denominations that read more into the OT than that. They take it more literal and incorperate it into the whole book, kinda of like it was meant. I can respect that more than picking and choosing what you want out of the book.
The church I was raised in was like what you stated. The OT is in the bible but its nothing to really pay attention to and certainly doesnt have anything to do with the way you should live your life.
Keep in mind I think religion to be the epitome of all that is wrong, aka, its all BS. But, like Ive said before, if one does choose to practice a certain religion at least do it to the fullest. Any less just nullifies what youre doing in the first place.
There is one thing that's a fact about the New testament, And the men That wrote it ,,First the men that wrote it where guys like us , back in that day they where fishermen , tax collector , and one thief ,,, not,, Religious leaders,, or had any reason to do what they did when writing the New Testament , After Jesus was crucified they ran and hid expect one, who denied knowing Jesus 3 times ,,another a murder
These are the guys who wrote it , If that's all I knew then I would have ran from Christianity , But I know there's more to the New Testament than that ,,,Each one of these men where put to death for there belief in Jesus ,, Could I die for a lie ,,Why would these guys die for a lie ,,They are just like us ,,they couldn't ,,I couldn't ,The men who wrote the New Testament Where witness to the life of Jesus and what he did ,,
These are the men who wrote the New testament ,, And each one died for his belief and what he witnessed ,,Some of the book is just letters from one man to a church others are testimonies of what they seen and heard ,,I believe its true and What God wanted us to read today ,,and if am wrong when I die ,,wont matter ,, cause it didn't exist ,, But if its true then Yahoo for me ,,and sorry to one that don't believe
