HD Worm Drive Gears

Does anyone know how much of a difference the HD gears make? Im really looking for more wheel speed. Im running a ballistic 18.5 on 3s with a 12t pinion, and its dead slow. Im going to try going up in pinion size for now, as it didnt over heat or have any issues pulling the 12t. Just wondering if the HD gears are worth $40 to upgrade.
Thanks

Well worth it imo, not only for the wheelspeed but mainly because they're stronger too. What esc are you running? With an esc with timing advance you can gain a bit more wheelspeed without loosing your low end control.

My recommendation would be to put the HD worm gear only in the front...it will make a world of difference to you in turning and climbing steep verticals. Here's a video of mine at the last comp right after I did this mod to mine...I was lucky to place 1st, honestly, but needless to say compared to having the same gear ratio in the front and rear and having it like it is now with the front overruning the rear, it's night and day. Very little binding when approaching steep climbs anymore...

It should autoplay...

Nice! You've got some wheel speed there, what motor and battery are you running?

I'm running a 13.5 ballistic brushless with 14 tooth pinion. Battery is a 25c GensAce 3s. So far, I'm loving the setup...just minor tweaks hear and there now I think.

Good to know, thanks for the info. I guess Ill order some gears then. I'm running the Novak Goat 3s esc right now, I'm not sure if you can add timing with it. I thought about trying my MMP in it to see which is better, I like the programability of the castle. How are your run times with the 13.5, and what size lipo?

I was not going to install the HD gears until I wasted a pinion, boy was I wrong!! It is well worth it, if you price out the parts seperately the $40 is a bargain. I only installed my front for now as well and it does improve performance.

Like ever one els you can't go wrong with putting it in the front makeing it over drive save one if you ware it out and Dluxfab has chrome Ollie ones for the rear there just stock replacement and put that bad boy on 4s :) thats what I run get all the wheel speed you want

I've seen these, but don't know the difference to the regular drive.
- What does HD stand for?
- Can you please explain the difference(s) that make the HD superior?
- Can the HD spool be used with the regular worm pinion, and/or vice versa?

HD is for heavy duty, the HD spool have got less teeth (21) so they're much beefier.
Nope you can't mix them.

If the spools have different number of teeth the gear rate is also different.
Seems strange that it should be good to use different gearing front and rear... :???:

Yes the gear ratio is different, stock 25:1 and HD 21:1.

Not that strange, overdriving the front is pretty common, it helps turning tighter, climbing and binding.

I have some hd gears comIng and thinking about just putting them in the front is there any down sides to this?

keep your greasing and tear down cycles very strict with the hd's, they seem to like fresh grease more than the stockers, and due to the surface contact area on the gear interface, you're looking at a couple things. one being the amount of grease these things will end up going through....full double what i put through the stockers. second, that's that much more of a wear surface, when you run on old grease, you're running stuff with metal particles, also has a tendency to eat bearings if you're not careful (too much injection pressure through the grease port, or overloading the diff will force junk grease into the bearings). and remember that these are only really case hardened, once you get so much wear, you're down to softer metal.

they're overall a great gearset, tough as nails, and you get some more wheelspeed out of it if you put em in both diffs, or overdrive the front. the pros FAR outweigh the minimal cons of these. i'm a nut about maintenance, i do 3 hour tear downs religously. means tearing down twice a day, every day when i'm running it for testing, but i have no problem with that. moly grease is good stuff in either case, good against sliding friction and what i use is also made for shock loads as well, perfect worm grease. and at 4 bucks a 14oz tube, i have no problem going through half a tube a year.

You don't have to tear them down that often do you?

There's no downsides to running the HD just in the front...it's all advantages.

Chris
I wouldnt quite go that far.

There are a fair amount of times I cannot make a climb in my MOA without over driving the rear.
