How long do you go with the oil changes on your car/truck under normal driving conditions?

Years ago after reading on - Bob is the Oil Guy I started to really extend my oil change intervals. I just went 10,998 miles on regular 5W-20 Pennzoil.

Guess I'm just curious if most are still brain washed into the 3,000 mile thing.

I just changed mine this evening....last time was in June. Last time I changed the oil in my jeep was in '10.

I had gotten to the point I was doing oil changes in my XJ once a year, all though I probably shouldn't have pushed it that far, even though I use synthetic in it. The 200 I've been trying to change it around 3k, but it only has 9400 miles on it and is still on dino oil.......nice part though, is that if I take it to the dealer, I only pay for the filter and the bill ends up being around $12 with tax!

Me too. And last time I changed mine was in June also, of last year.

Yeah, lots of miles on that OCI. Pretty much 11,000 on the dot.

Oil changed at 100,144.

I currently have 111,142 miles on it.

99 F250 7.3 powerstroke about every 5k. Oil analysis every 2k. When your oil changes are $300 you tend to be little more hesitant but at the same time im not gonna kill a engine that ill get 700 thousand miles out of because I was a cheap @$$ and didn't change my oil.

Wifes 02 toyota highlander v6 about every 6-6500 and my 72 chevelle gets fresh oil just about every 100 miles

Fat fingered from the phone- Corey

Just got a 2013 Sonata turbo, went with synthetic at first 1500, then to a performance syn. at 3000 (just last week actually) 5W-40 Rotella T6 or Mobil-1 Deisel Truck is what it'll see from now on every 8-10K.

I have A front main leak and to lazy/busy to fix so I add oil as needed. (about a quart a week). New filter every couple months. (about 6k miles)

Recommended intervals is basically a revenue marketing ploy by manufacturers.

I think the oil change interval depends mostly on the vehicle and usage.

If you have a diesel or a heavy truck that works hard all day every day, I think somewhere around the old fashioned 3K mark is still a good target window to shoot for. But that is just a personal thing and think you could safely go for the 5K mark if you wanted.

I also think if you have an older pre 1970's , every 3K or 12 months is a good target. I say 3K because the internal tolerances in those older motors generally is not there like a 2000 and up engine resulting in a quicker break down of the oils viscosity and I say 12 months because of moisture that accumulates in the crankcase of vehicles that set in storage unused.
I read somewhere once the actual fluid ounce of water that is accumulated over a 12 month span of a vehicle that sets unused.... I forget what it was, but was surely high enough for me to remember to want to change the oil in my classics once a year.

But if you have a regular old daily light duty driver passenger car, I personally see no harm at reaching for the 10K mark especially when just about every manufacturer have moved their recommended changes to a minimum of 5K and some even 10K.
I do believe that most of the 2013 Dodge products right now recommend 8K, and Volvo is stating a recommended change at 10K.

With today's synthetic oils and outstanding micro filters I personally have no problem safely trusting the 5K-8K mark in my newer passenger vehicles.

I drive about 100 miles a day, most of it freeway. The Ranger has a pretty easy life, so I've been going 10,000 miles between changes. I feed it Mobil 1 since the first oil change.

My truck gets 4 gallons of Mobil 1 synthetic every 10k
wifes suv gets 7 quarts of mobil 1 synthetic every 7k

I used to change my gas vehicles every 3k miles, until I realized the oil I was taking out was still clean.

rotella t6 5w-40 synthetic...every 2-2500 miles

That's the honey Subaru's love (and many other engines). Hell I know a guy running it in a Lambo Gallardo.

Though I make it to 6K before buying supplies, then the following half decent weekend is the oil change.

i use castrols syn and frams extended guard oil filter when i remember to get to it, it is any where between 5,000 and 10,000 miles and never have troubles....the oil still looks good and how ever clear the oil out of the bottle looks........bob
