Hpi wr8

Sooo....How about that WR8? Tower Hobbies briefly had it listed as "In Stock Limited Quantities" the other day, but now it's back to "Early August". I'll get mine next time around.

So got the chance to pull a Nitro WR8 out of the box at my local hobby shop.

First impression is it looks beautiful! The suspension is really smooth and the tires feel great. The detailing on the body is really nice and the quality seems really good. Now what I am a little disapointed in. It basically looks like a extended wheelbase 10th scale car. It has 4mm stub shafts, were as the DRX has 6mm. It also has standard 10th scale 4" inch shocks, were as the DRX has 8th scale shocks. Basically everything in it looks like a 10th scale vehicle.

Now the biggest disappointment for me... It is small!

Now don't get me wrong the car is great looking and HPI lists several hop-up options and different tires and wheels on the box, but I thought it would compete more with the DRX in the scale area. Sadly it is not even close, to me this is a big indicator in how it will handle, Im sure it drives great and everything feels really smooth, but the scale is not there to be even close to the same level as the Kyosho DRX. If I had to chose between the two cars at this point it would be the DRX.

The WR8 has smaller tires, wheels, lower belly clearance, smaller wheel base, narrower track width and not nearly the beef the DRX has.

Even with all that said I still want two of them, because frankly it is a work of art. I already broke it to the girlfriend that we need to clear space on the mantel for the WR8 to call home. :ror:

I think the negative, well not necessarily negative, but your 'findings' are what I actually like about the WR8. Coming from a life of 1/10, I think the DRX might be a little too big, so the WR8 would be a nice medium for me.

Similar to the Short Course craze - it started as a bunch of streched 1/10th trucks with 1/10th everything. Now they have bigger shocks, shortcourse motors, etc.

But yes, as many have said on different forums, a bit of consistency would be nice so different brands could actually compete with each other.

I don't think they would look funny on the same track.. Big subaru, little ford.. Just like real life. One is smaller than the other.

Thanks Ty for the pictures next to each other.

I was hoping more of a slash size. Thinking "1/8" oh well.

Thanks for the comparison shots Ty. Any chance you'd be able to put a 1/10th scale car next to it? haha I was ready to jump on the WR8, but now that I see it's so much smaller than the DRX, I may end up going with the DRX.

I agree. The DRX is very cool, but I like the size of the WR8 better. Kind of a happy medium between the smaller rally cars and the DRX.

All I got is the DRX next to a standard 10th scale.

Yeah I don't think the DRX is too large though. The WR8 is still very cool though and I hope a bunch of them pop up locally.

No such thing as too many rally cars.

I like the size of the DRX, but would really have to see the WR8 in person to know for sure which one I like. Let me know when you have one, so I can see it run too

Last night I was just browsing images of the DRX and found these nice comparison shots from generis (GCM Racing) on scalebuildersguild.com.
Just another way to compare the DRX and WR8 to other vehicles. "thumbsup"
