Jcboof's T1E/Mayhem XR10 build

Figured I'd update my thread today since It's been a while.

This past weekend, I got a chance to finally put this rig to the test. The TCS BattleGrounds competition was in Fairborn Ohio and I'm pretty happy with how everything went.

The truck worked great, but I believe that I was just so used to driving my old berg that I figured that this truck would do everything the same as my old truck. I have a few comps on this truck but no "REAL" driving time to compare and tune.
There were just a few things this past weekend that my truck just flat refused to do. I've been noticing that I've been having a bit of an issue with breakovers and clearance lately and that came to full realization this weekend on 2 courses. I had been running my berg at 3 5/16" at the front of the skid and on saturday after having big troubles making a bonus gate that everyone else seemed to clear without an issue I had measured my GC and found that I was at 3" fully drooped out. This extra 5/16" that I was used to with my berg had become my friend but the lack of it had became my foe on the XR.
I know that the lower CG that I was running had made my truck more stable but I had not changed my driving style yet to adapt to the new lower GC.
After round 1 at the comp, I was 3 points behind the leader and I was feeling pretty good about it, but after round 2 I thought that I was out of contention due to 1 course that kicked my butt. But luckily I managed to still do well enough in the second round that I squeaked in the the Top 5 and was able to run the finals course.

Right before the finals and after getting some advice from Andy (CRSMacgyver) I adjusted my GC to 3 1/4" at the front of the skid and did a little testing and immediately I noticed a big difference. The truck crawled the same, but the breakover and clearance issues that I had noticed before had gone away. I did notice that the rear felt a little stiffer than before but that was due to the fact that I just moved my shocks out one hole in the rear rather than removing my internal limiter in the shocks.

I ended the day sitting in 4th place overall and couldn't be happier. My truck and i had suffered a little at the beginning of the day because of not having a lot of drive time and tuning time on the truck, but I definitely know what I need to work on now.

I did not suffer from any breakage at all this weekend either. I'm fully convinced that this truck is very durable and can handle just about anything that my berg could have. The RC4WD gears worked great and the VP goodies did their job great also! The only thing that I am definitely going to change on the truck is my upper links. The sleeved delrin that I was running has GOT TO GO!!! I have been running 1/4" delrin links with 4mm allthread rod inside and with a slight 15 degree bend at the axle ends, but after getting into a few binds and finding my wheelbase changing from side to side, I have decided to change them out for straight links. The bent links are NOT needed for the Rockshow SS chassis. There is plenty of clearance on the axle case and for the motors to run straight uppers on the front and rear. Now I know I won't have to worry about a crooked truck once I switch to straight links. Probably going with Ti or Aluminum.

Hopefully someone will post up some pics of my truck and I'll post em up here.
My Mayhem wheels held up great this weekend also, not one single problem at all, and the VP knuckle weights did their thing. I'm just not sure that I can tell a big difference between running knuckle weights and internal weights on the wheels though.

But a big thanks to CRSMacgyver for taking his time to give me some advice right before the finals!"thumbsup" Much appreciated man!

Heres a couple of pics (Courtesy of SVEN) of my rig doing work on a course this weekend. This particular course was my best of the day, Ended up with a -17 on it. That was the best score of the day on that course!!

Check out the SICK amount of caster I was running in the first pic. I decided after that course that it was just too much and returned it back to the "stock" max setting. I had cut out the slots on the C's to allow for more caster, I only set it one step past the stock max and it was WAY too much.

Thanks for the GREAT pics Steven!!

Good job Jesse on the 4th place finish.

What is the advantage or expected advantage to run that much caster? That first pic is crazy!!

Heres a vid that CJ (Rockbound) took of my first course of the day. Wasn't the best, but I can say that the last gate of that course not many people actually crawled it like I did. Most people tumbled from the top and somehow fell through the last gate! Some gated and some fell through cleanly.

Thanks man!! The SS is a pretty darn snappy looking chassis for sure! The Evo's are pretty slick too. Very happy with them so far. Just wish I had some Delrin 1"ers for the rear to lighten this beast up a bit.

Great job on 4th JC, and a really good day for the Rockshow SS. "thumbsup"

Thanks for the photos of the front upper links.

Thanks! The Rockshow SS was all over that place this past weekend. Outnumbered the Moonbuggy chassis even!

And No prob on the pics. I'm switching to straight front links though this weekend as soon as I get my Ti. The bent links were just causing to much grief this weekend with bending up and causing a crooked truck. There should still be plenty of battery clearance with straight links too. Maybe even using the offset rod ends will help too.

Very clean rig man.

Justin

Thanks!"thumbsup"
