Jeep Grand Cherokee (Rick's Build)

What is your guys opinions on cutting that lower rocker panel ground effect panel off and going with rock sliders. I keep thinking about it I just don't want it to look goofy as the door seams would just kind of end. Maybe I could cut it to that body line before the seam. I just think it sort of looks out of place on a Jeep like this, Rock sliders would look to low. I don't know maybe not.
I would cut that running board off at the 90 degree bend just below the bottom of the door. Leave that 1/8" (or whatever it is) under the door and then put the rock sliders on.

What an entertaining build thread. Very creative, both the build itself and the presentation. Some of those pics are real funny!
Anyone not familiar with Mnster and his "crew" should check out Jim's buildup thread."thumbsup"

I'm in Florida right now, I did order all of the axle parts I bent, my brother said a few boxes made it to the house. So when I get back this weekend I should be able to further document Ricks progress.

I've been looking for a while for a good wife for Rick. Walmart doesn't seem to have much. Except for a X-men lady but her face looks stressed like shes squeezing a poop out or something.

I've overloaded my photobucket account with over 1000 pictures I've had to start deleting the non Jim and Rick stuff. The Bandwidth was overloaded for a month as well, had to upgrade to pro. Don't worry the Jim and Rick stuff is here to stay."thumbsup"

I'd like to get that body mounted up by next month so I can help Rick start with the real truck mods and stop with the rig creation.

Thanks for all the compliments.

Hey Ben, I picked Rick/Jim up a leather welding apron. I'll have Ralph throw it in the Touareg/Chevy when we come down to the MWRCA April 15th comp "thumbsup"

Thats a Quarter in pic's in case you couldn't tell.
Hard to get good pic's at night with a POS cam.

Rick could sure use one of those aprons, the tin foil welding apron Jim was using was not that comfortable last time.

Anyways, the parts all came and Rick went back to work. I helped him machine a new axle shaft.

Drilled the spiders and diff straight through with a 5mm drill bit.

He then used the teflon shims to shim the ring and pinion.

After getting it all set right we drilled a 2mm cross pin hole in the diff and shaft. We decided against the set screw idea as we have had problems with set screws loosening in the past. (Think pede driveshaft output's)

Being too fearful of another costly lathe disaster we used a hacksaw to cut the groove.

When we ordered the 5mm stock for the axle shaft from McMaster, we also ordered a 2mm air hardened rod for a good supply of ultra cheap cross pins.

Now done with the internals

After getting the case back together Rick found that the outer bearings liked to walk down the shaft. So he made these trick little spacers from 1/4 brake line.

More later...

Discount Tire called Rick up today, guess his new comp tires and wheels finally came in. He bought these tires for performance over looks as flywheels are not the best on rocks.

The tires are 2.2 buggy wide fronts, the tires are sticky Proline rubber which is what really counts.

He choose the larger 1.9 flywheels to keep himself legal for 1.9 scale comps.
DSC01378.jpg

The wheel was loose inside the tire.
DSC01381.jpg

Here is the wheel after narrowing and modification to the wheel to make the wheel fit the TLT axle.
DSC01383.jpg

Rick found a old tire behind the garage.
DSC01382.jpg

He cut the old tire into strips.
DSC01386.jpg

He then glued the strips of tire to the wheel.
DSC01388.jpg

The strips take up the air gap and convert the 2.2 tire to 1.9 there by making it a comp legal tire.
DSC01390.jpg

The tires will be used for rocks only as the flywheels look more scale and work better in the muck. The tires are not glued yet as we are waiting to finish the rig to find the proper foam setup.

Those tires work GREAT! I used the rears (slightly wider) on my G Wagen and the traction was amazing. Full foams seemed to work well for me, good luck with them 8)

We have a comp in Des Moines this coming Sunday. I think Rick and his Grand Cherokee will be there.
There should be some action shots on Sunday night/Mon.
