Jeep Grand Cherokee (Rick's Build)

Im more impressed that throughout the build, Jim's Suit and tie show NO Dirt!

Scotch guard FTW!

Nice build!

Rick brought a new daily driver, the snow was starting to fade away so he decided he needed a new ride to get to work. He found this used BMW on craigslist and with help from Jim went to pick it up. After getting it in the shop he began outfitting it for the rough terrain. The BMW has to allow Rick to make it to work on time.

He started by changing the fluids.

Earlier in the day he outfitted the BMW with some cut and shut Flywheel brand paddles. The mall tires wouldn't get him much further then the driveway.

Ah the reason he bought a BMW.

One problem though, no head room.

So after cutting a hole in the floor to drop the seat down a little and heating the seat with a heatgun to allow him to sit leaned back some, he was good to go.

After testing the flex Rick knew something had to be done. Seems the front suspension was designed to absord heavy impacts and not move otherwise.
DSC01123.jpg

Tearing into the front suspension he found the coils.

After digging around some in the parts box he found a TLT shock spring.
DSC01127.jpg

After cutting the spring he found that it was a perfect fit.

After flexing the front again he found that there was a good improvement.

After ditching the rear motor skid plate and modding the rear half of the frame with the dremel he found even more flex.

sand paddles thats great i got the same beamer but i tried to mount it on a ta02 chassis it worked ok but it was just a little goofy lookin i like the idea of keepin it kinda stock better wish i would have done that instead "thumbsup"

Yeah my original plan with that truck was the tear the interior out and put it in the jeep. But, then I realized how much work would have to be done to the trans and windows in the jeep. The jeep body would never sit as low as I wanted it to so I said screw it, Rick needs a parts wagon. This will get Rick wheeling for now till he dominates the wheeling world later.

well if he breaks anything on it i got spares lol pretty sure i wont be using the drive train parts i may still have to get the beamer rollin maybe mount it on a 1/18 nylint just for kicks keepin the interior will be hard

hes got his gangsta lean on.
ware can you get them bmws. are they like the ta02 or a xc

Rick met up with Jim today at the local trail head for some wheelin. Rick figured he might as well get the strap out already.

The BMW didn't do to bad for being 2wd, the main problem is it just lacked a low range gearbox.

I then took the camera and followed Jim down the tougher trails.

i want to get one of those BMW's. do you know if they are still on sale? i would also like to see some pics of the mod Rick did to the rear. i am very interested in both trucks, the BMW and the Jeep.

thats cool.to bad the bmw is only 2wd. does your yard always flood like that? did the bmw have any problems with the watter or did you watter proff it.

There were a few laying there in the clearance aisle at Wal-Mart. I put a balloon over the board, however the truck did start to cut out towards the end, if you would knock on the truck just right you could get it to work. I'm thinking its just the crappy Tamiya connector. The BWM isn't hobby grade at all really, not enough power for deeper mud or enough torque for creeping up rocks. But, it is a fun little beater truck. It would be a cool body to make a dakar style baja truck out of if you could find a small enough drivetrain and tires say like from a Mini t or something.

ya but for 10 bucks who carse if it brakes you still have that body and tou could probly replace that motor for a HB one.

Yeah a few years ago we added on a extra garage and never seemed to get the yard drainage right. The water will sit like that for a while till the ground thaws out. My dad was actually going to get the sub pump and pump it to the curb today. I don't care, its fun for me.
