So, I just bought an old ford truck with a Kraco AM/FM radio with an 8 Track player

Anyone know what impedance speakers I can run off of it?

I was just about to buy some nice Polks till I realized they were 2.7 Ohm speakers. Then I got to thinking if the Kraco could even handle 4 Ohm speakers.

I'm just wondering if I can run modern speakers direct or if I should get a line converter and use an amp instead. The long term plan is an amp, but when I get the radio rebuilt I can get line outs installed, So I don't need to bother with a line converter.

8 track era will most likely be 8 ohm and there is a really good possibility the speakers ground to the body of the car but I'll assume you know enough to tell if it does or not.

I ran 4 ohm speakers off of an 8track, can't remember what the brand was though.

Dude, why are you rockin' an 8-track? slingin' those radios should have made you a "thousand-aire" by now, you should be able to pick up a fancy am-fm cassette from goodwill with that kind of money.

Because it came with my truck...I was going to just slap in a retrosound radio into it. But then I found out the 8-track player still works. So I'm gonna rock the 8 track player.

And the truck I bought

I like that truck.
I ran my old 8-track through a 40 watt "booster-equalizer" into a set of 6x9's back in the late 80's and it worked well.

I have never heard of a booster-equalizer, but I'll google search and see what I can find.

I also want to get some speakers for the rear. But I can't find any pre-made speaker boxes for the rear of that truck . So I'm going have to get creative. (I don't think I want subs, just some good speakers)

Unless you're planning on restoring this thing to #'s matching show quality I think I'd just get a modern head unit and forget about it.

Contrary to popular belief, you can get Kenny Rogers on CD or MP3/4.

WOW, that truck looks familiar! I wonder if that's the same one my dad owned for a year or so.... Same 8-track player, even!

No, far from a factory restore...it's getting a dana 60 swap up front, sterling in the rear. All new suspension, lifted for ~35's but springs spec'd out for an F250 or F350 (for towing). Eventually the 460 in it will be built into a beast.

But I still want the interior to feel classic. I was going to get a retrosound radio. But there's nothing wrong with this radio. But all I have is a dash speaker. I want to hook the door speakers back up.

And why not rock an 8-track? Also, when/if I get the radio rebuilt it's not hard or uncommon to add in an aux port for an mp3 player.

I bought it from a guy in Glenrock, Wyoming...but he bought it from a guy in washington not too long ago.

It's just an old school amplifier with an EQ built into it.

So, looks like I'm going to run this little guy to convert my speaker outs to a low level signal for an amp and run all my speakers through an amp.

Now the question is. How many channels do I need for my future amp. It would be nice to have front/rear speakers and a sub. But at the same time I have no idea where to put rear speakers and a sub.

omfg... NEVER heard of an eq booster? those were standard issue when i was young. spent many a night stoned in some parking lot watching leds bounce... ;)

Yep, I too had one of the combo EQ / amp booster things, and also liked the dancing LEDs possibly a bit too much during those years of my life.

heres an e.q. booster. it was just a crappy amp with graphic equalizer. very popular add-on bitd. there are more vintage looking ones that would fit perfect mounted under the dash of that ford.

A 4 channel amp that is bridgable on 2 of the channels will run the door speakers and sub or a 5 channel. A memphis bell would be just rite.

Sent from the old leather shop

Dude, I just crushed one of these with a D10 during the summer, it had a white top half of the cab, and the rest was painted orange. Nice find all the same...lol, Kenny Rodgers.

With all of that work ahead of you I think the radio would be the least of my concerns. JMHO....

Trying to make an 8 track sound good through modern means is a waste of time. If you want to keep the original unit for aesthetics fine, just don't expect much as far as sound quality. FWIW a lot of old school resto's keep the factory unit in place albeit non functional, and have a hidden head unit that actually controls the sound. Just food for thought...
