Leo's Willy!

Great I can't wait to see this stuff. I have a Jeep Rubicon hard body off a wally world rc truck i plan on building custom frame rails for and going from there. Not sure how detailed i'll get with it it will be my first and i will post pics when i get started but where did you get your 1/2" tubing at....hobby store or welding supply store or just from a steel manufacturer cuz thats a great way to make frame rails thats for sure.

Good luck on the project. The square tubing came from Lowe's. Tractor supply has it as well as Home Depo. bending it and cutting it in half is nothing new. I got the idea from here. people have been doing it for years.

well after taking a couple day away from the truck i finally got some progress on it.

first I wanted to tackle the rear bumper. I started with more square stock and pie cut the ends

then I bent the tabs down

welded the seams up

and smoothed it all off

Here it is all cleaned up

Then I trimmed some of the frame off and welded it almost flush with the body

DSCN0061.jpg

I left the tubing full width because it will eventually serve as the rear body mounts.

Then after some debate I decided to go with the 1/4" tube for the rear fenders and tacked the pieces on

DSCN0062.jpg

Then I got started on some of the body mounts

I cut some sheet metal and a small piece of tube then TIG'd them together

DSCN0065.jpg

I lined the two pieces and drilled and tapped some holes

DSCN0064.jpg

then with the two pieces bolted together I ground the ends smooth

These will eventually be the posts behind the front seats that ties the cage into the frame. the cage will get welded to the second plate.

Enough for now, I'm off to work.

Lookin good i figured you had to be tig welding all this stuff seems like the only reasonable thing to do. I don't have access to a tig so i'm either gonna try brazing or jb weld lol I don't plan on wheeling the thing real hard so no prob. How you plan on painting this I know it can be tricky getting paint to stick to aluminum thats what made me use a fiberglass tub on my 81 Scrambler instead of the aluminum one. My painter told me sometimes it works and other times no matter what you do you might be driving down the road and a whole sheet of paint will peel off the side in the wind . Anyways looks great wish I had your skill "thumbsup".

man it is looking totally killer looking i am dieing to have it done lol 8-)8-)"thumbsup""thumbsup"
Hey Leo, Have you mentioned this to Les yet? Lmk when you bring it over there(of course when you get it lol). I'd like to see this in person.
The damage effect is what puts this over the top.

The first Flatty was awesome.

Thanks everyone for all the kind words. The truck is on hold right now until i get some parts from Leo. don't worry i'll post any progress once i can get to it.

for painting I use rust-oleum auto primer. works great and pretty much any paint will go on top without much trouble

Did a bit more tonight

I'm still waiting on parts but I got some cage material and figured I'd start on the rear exo. I decided to use solid rod for this part since the 1/4" tubing couldn't make tight bends. Here are the corners after bending and trimming

DSCN0070.jpg

Then I tacked them into place

DSCN0071.jpg

Then I bent up a top hoop. This will protect the top of the tailgate and provide an area to attach the tire carrier.

DSCN0072.jpg

finally I added the lower grill mounts

DSCN0074.jpg

Here is the whole chassis as it sits now.

Once the drive train parts arrive i'll be getting into it a lot more.

I didn't get much progress to post about. I got a package from Leo with most of the drivetrain parts. So I threw those together. The Jeep will be heavy with lots of power so he went for strength and got Axial axles with the aluminum knuckles and C's, steel gears, one piece steel locker and rear lockout kit.

He also sent the wheels and tires along. The Rock Stompers are much large than I expected so I had the try them on my Jeep to see how they fit

I like them but my axles are to wide for the wheels in my opinion

After I got the axles together I mocked them up under the truck.

This is just about the final position. The width is perfect with the axial axles. The front tire may come back a little but i'll determine that once i get the springs done. Oh yah, this will be leafed as well;-)

More tomorrow

it is starting to look like a kick @ss rig the only thing different in my rig and your rig is the dents and scratches lol "thumbsup""thumbsup"
