Great I can't wait to see this stuff. I have a Jeep Rubicon hard body off a wally world rc truck i plan on building custom frame rails for and going from there. Not sure how detailed i'll get with it it will be my first and i will post pics when i get started but where did you get your 1/2" tubing at....hobby store or welding supply store or just from a steel manufacturer cuz thats a great way to make frame rails thats for sure.
Good luck on the project. The square tubing came from Lowe's. Tractor supply has it as well as Home Depo. bending it and cutting it in half is nothing new. I got the idea from here. people have been doing it for years.
well after taking a couple day away from the truck i finally got some progress on it.
first I wanted to tackle the rear bumper. I started with more square stock and pie cut the ends
then I bent the tabs down
welded the seams up
and smoothed it all off
Here it is all cleaned up
Then I trimmed some of the frame off and welded it almost flush with the body
I left the tubing full width because it will eventually serve as the rear body mounts.
Then after some debate I decided to go with the 1/4" tube for the rear fenders and tacked the pieces on
Then I got started on some of the body mounts
I cut some sheet metal and a small piece of tube then TIG'd them together
I lined the two pieces and drilled and tapped some holes
then with the two pieces bolted together I ground the ends smooth
These will eventually be the posts behind the front seats that ties the cage into the frame. the cage will get welded to the second plate.
Enough for now, I'm off to work.
