I'm posting this lil story here only cause it has a little bit of crawler info from a young kid that lives on my block.

I occasionally will take my crawlers out in front of my house and crawl on the 1 lonely rock in my yard .

Most of the time I will blast a lil time away with my revo and R40.

Yesterday I was out with one of my 2.2's just snapping some pics and such. When my kid neighbor walks over and asks about the new proline memory foam. We sit and BS for like 10 mins.

He then explains to me that he tried "shaping" the tire. I asked what do you mean ? He said you know make it skinny. Ok I said narrowing  . Yea that's it he says. Then he says I screwed up and don't want to buy more foams , can you show me how ? Sure I say.

But then he says he wants to show me what he tried after he ruined the foams. Sure I say again.

He pulls the beadlock rings off his proline 2.2 wheels and then pulls the tire off. But then I see his foam and he says hold out your hands. He dumps little dime size plugs with the size of about 10 dimes stacked on top of one another.

He said he was reading how people use airsoft pellets for the "low center of gravity" and was not allowed to have them so he used his fathers gasket punch and made this little cylinder shaped plugs to form the tire while climbing.

Now I know we as big shot crawlers might not take this as the best "mod" but coming from a kid who is 9 and a little slow in learning , I find this pretty damn cool.

I asked to drive his crawler and see how it runs. But he said the was no juice left in the batteries

I have asked his parents numerous times to bring him to a comp and really show what he can accomplish with some competition. But his father says he is terrified of other people making fun of him and telling him he is doing something wrong.

All in all I just wanted to post this and let some of the "n00bs" see and read it and really take notice that if you just sit back and read and experiment you will amaze people.

If this should be in chit chat sorry.

Awsome story! Its sad that the parents will not allow him to go for fear of being rediculed. At our local comps, the guys are more then happy to help a youngin out. i have never seen a kid get put down at a comp.... if anything, it is nice to see a new face and a young kid who is excited about something. now, when he turns into a teenager.. let the razin begin! It'll give him thicker skin and he might learn some new choice words.

People are nicer in person. He'd be more likely to be ridiculed on the board here. That's awesome that he came up with his own ideas. I was barely self aware at 9 years old.

I've been racing r/c cars for a long time now, and one thing I tell guys is you have to give back to the sport. WE ALL needed help to get where we've gotten, this includes crawling, or racing, or whatever .... We've all asked stupid questions, all bugged the local pro, all made our mistakes, but finding help made the trek much easier.

So, give something back when the new guy asks you a question. Take the time to give some advice, or encouragement. Above all, don't be a dick .... the new guys are the future of the sport, get them started in a positive way and we'll have a positive sport that we enjoy being part of.

Thanks for posting the story!

Sounds like the father has some issues to me. Take him to a comp yourself! I know he would have fun.

Good story BTW

Hell, we were all kids at one time. The "annoying kids" today are not the kids fault, its the home learning they recieve. Most parents today use cell phones, video games, and pc's as babysitters. This guy should be honored that somebody wants to spend quality time with his son. He should be out with him. It' cool that people like Prototype offer thier time to do such. Not one of us on here was not a newbe at one time. I' glad that kid entertains himself by trying hands-on experiences and not waiting on his pop to help him.

Actually his parents want him to go , But like I said his father says the kid is the nervous one . I alos have offered to bring him myself but , the parents are nervous that something will happen to him. Wich I can understand with all the creepy people out there . I do not want to push the subject of bringing him cause that might look like Im trying to get little boys to coem into the woods alone .:-(

Thanks for the compliments about the story guys.

As a little update , His father knocked on my door this morning while I happen to be charging my batteries in my 2.2 and said he wants to know what type of rock to get ordered for the yard. Looks like this lil kiddo will be having his own rock course in his back yard.

Now I'm jealous of him.

Right on Ryan, that is too cool!!8) That'll give you someone nearby to sharpen your skills with "thumbsup" It's amazing how kids look at things differently, whether it be obstacles, lines, or truck setups. They have a different perspective on things that some of us "older" guys wouldn't think of trying ;-)
You'll just have to tell his dad you want to "mentor" him, so you can go over and use his rocks:lol::lol:

i my self dont have any kids but i can see what the father means with having his child compete against adults. at the last comp a father (mid 40s) and 10yr old is son were in the comp. dad was 3rd and son 6th (me last in 10th at 24yrs) the child broke down crying how he wasn't any good and failed at every way he tryed to get around the course better then some rigs with 2g's in them. of course the father consoled him and he was fine but was strange to see.

yea unfortunately outside of crawling, kids competitions get pretty competitive. I can see where the father is coming from. Iv seen fathers, even other adults yelling at kids because they didnt win their wrestling match by a large enough margin. Im talking SCREAMING. I my self havent gome to any comps but i hope to find some in GA!

Sounds like he is enjoying the hobby and having fun.
Pressuring him to come to the comps won't help if he doesn't want to go.
I would just continue to encourage him on his rig.

Has he attended any comps as a spectator?

Taking him as a spectator would help him get to know a few more people and see that it is a fun no pressure atmosphere where he can enjoy his hobby even more.

Most parents today use cell phones, video games, and pc's as babysitters

That's a big problem in these days. My brother and sister-in-law do it all the time. They have actually cancelled road trips because the portable VCR for the minivan was not working. They'll shelve an entire trip rather than spend 4 or 5 hours in a minivan with their children "un-entertained" as they say. Because without the "electronic babysitter" the kids just go nuts in 15 minutes...

Ryan you are that creepy guy in the woods... lol

But more seriously good story. Its a good point for everybody to see now and then. People forget they all come from the same progression of learning. Starting with zero knowledge and learning from other and experience. OGs and newbs can work together to better the hobby.

Now bring that little champ to the rocks so I can stomp him... not likely.

At our local comps we have had several kids compete (sub 10 year old) and they have a ball and do fairly well.

What the more "mature" members need to remember is that this is sopossed to be fun! We're playing w/ toys and sometimes we need to remember that life and limb are not on the line if we fail to make a gate.

IMO the kids have the right perspective, have fun and when the run is done forget about it."thumbsup"

Prototype, I hope you can convince Dad to allow his boy to attend a competition, I'm sure he will do fine. He sounds like a great kid.

What you need to do is get him some tennis balls and set up a course on his new rockpile.

Let him run some lines, and you call out penalties and keep score. Then show him how you'd run the same course while he scores.

Bet he ends up kicking your ass after a few weeks.
