Some more:

Plastic rod ends were not very reliable, especially on front axle side. Replaced with RC4WD alu rod ends (part # Z-S0429)

Integy side rock rail mounts (part # C24653GUN)

Filled transmission with RC4WD Monster oil (part # Z-S0520). Maybe I put insufficient amount of lube, it is noisier then when it was filled with ball bearing grease.

Experimented with extension of WB8 drive shafts. 2 female ends and 1 cut male part with alu link inside to make it harder. Using it now in rear, works good.

Time to update my scale business. It's been a while since I took my SCX10 out.
Last few months I was all about moving to Moscow, taking new job and no time for hobby.
Last weekend I went to park to meet other scale fans. I am impressed with local scene, did not expect to see so many people with RC 4x4 rigs

Body wheel base is 13", will require some links stretching.

Steering is occupying my mind lately. High clearance knuckles and universal joints can offer more angle then stock. Still <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ackermann_steering_geometry">Ackerman angle</a> is completely opposite to what it should be. Found a link for <a href="http://crawlster.de/CR-universal/bta-gallery.html">German solution</a>, here is pic to get the idea

With Axial knuckles as they are the only option is to move steering behind the axle. That requires modified steering link like above or like this one

After reassembling it at home works fine. Don't know what happened to it.

Joined winter rc season last weekend.

Performance of my rig in snow is below average. Wheels are getting rock solid in no time. First I thought it is because of ice forming on warm tires. So I cooled my rig outside before putting it on snow. But wheels were still solid. Turned out Panther RC foams are freezing.

I decided to try to make foamless wheels. Took the foams out and assembled wheels outside at -4C (25F). I put small amount of grease on tire bid so it will fit easier and make a tighter seal.
Indoor at around 22C (72F) tires acquired a bit more pressure. They hold 2.8 kg (6.2 lbs) rig quite good. Looks like running with low pressure.

Will wait for colder weather to get more pressure in wheels.
Another way is to open ventilation hole in the rim and put wheels in freezer.

I did not do it yet because my wheels are sealed form outside and inside.

Second BMS 28A servo died. It works fine until you put it in water and mud.
1st thing to go out is potentiometer. And all electronics is very sensitive.
Servo that died half a year ago suddenly came back to life. At least potentiometer seems to work OK. But it turns left not so good as it turns right, amplitude and speed.

I was going to replace potentiometer. Had a winch servo I wanted to use as a donor. But Its potentiometer is different and not transferable to steering servo.

There is are reduction gears so the output shaft can make several turns while electrode make only 1/4.

Second BMS 28A servo died. It works fine until you put it in water and mud....

The same can be said for pretty much anything that isn't properly prepped for wet stuff. I've got a couple 35a's with conformal coated boards, marine grease in the gear case with an extra external o-ring sandwiched between case and servo arm and no issues. Running cms vs. axle mounted is sometimes also more advantageous as the water isn't being forced in from forward motion.

Either way, you've now got yourself a strong servo winch "thumbsup"

I added some conformal coating to the board, sealed the case with silicon and put o-ring on servo arm. For now servo survived 3 hours run in snow, water and mud.
Going to mount servo on chassis for more reliability. Will I get a lot of steering trouble if I keep 4-link front with CMS?

Also tried to wash Panther RC foam. I heard memory foam lose its properties after washing machine. No, it does not. Still turns into wood in the cold.

After almost a year I am back. Truck has been sitting on the shelf all this time. Missed summer season.
I thought XR4 radio was dead. But during New Year holidays I installed new servo (on chassis this time) and found radio working fine after several resets.

It is snowing every day. Or at least every other day.
I decided to improve tire performance with chain. Bought 8 meters (26 ft) of 1mm - smallest size available in hardware store.
Guys told me I will need at least 7 meters. That is not true. 1 meter (~3'4") is enough for 1.9 Irok.

Looks like they are falling into the tread a bit. Would you have used larger chain?

They are. Tread pattern is very deep on sides. Chain links go well over tread in the middle.
Next available size was too big for 1.9 wheels. Maybe ok for 2.2 and monsters.
Anyway chains add some look) Not sure even big chain will really work in deep snow like we are having now. On the picture above you can notice bigger chains on Summit. And it still getting stuck pretty fast in untouched snow.

BTW my chains weight 23 grams (0.8 oz.) each. Just for info.

Getting ready for summer season. Got Vaterra TSL tires. They do not fit standard wheels because of different bead.
Here is Vaterra TSL (left) compared to RC4WD Irok (right)

There was no way to mount Vaterra tires. No matter how hard I tried the only way is to use different rings.

My SCX10 came with cut Honcho bumper. I don't see how it increase performance. Found used full width bumper, I think it looks better.

This weekend I took wheel chains for first run.

Since last time it's been warm, above freezing. Then temperature went down again. So no deep snow, only hard snowpack.

Don't know about deep snow but chains do work in slippery conditions. They really help to get up icy hills.

Vaterra TSLs are foamless now. Assembled wheels in freezer. Method works good. Tires are soft and look scale.
