splicing in a jst plug

so i just put a hobbywing 1080 in my trx4, so with stock trx esc you have a jst plug coming out of the esc, th hobbywing not. Can i splice in a jst plug where the HW1080 connects with the motor? I dont see any problem with it just want to make sure.

Also it would be straight voltage from the lipo this way correct?

The voltage or amps would vary if you did that as the esc controls the motor. Better off splicing off the battery cable.

Thanks thats what i wanted to know befoe i did this, i thought of it this way because i already had to sodder connecters onto those wires and didnt want to cut into the main batt wires, guess i have to.

U can slide the tabs out of the connector on the esc for the batt. Thatd save u from cuttin any wires. Just solder them to the wires n re-insert the spade back in the connector housing

Thanks! didnt know i could do that on the hw1080 stock connector.

On a side note i want to hook up a ess dual sound box, will that use a lot of the battery power and cut run time by a lot?

Im not sure bout the sound kit. I was lookin into one myself, just havnt decided to let money fall that way yet lol. Maybe somebody with experiance on sound kits will chime in

Splicing into the main battery leads could provide too much voltage. Check the max voltage for the electronics. If the max voltage for the lights is 6-8 volts you should get a bec (ideal) or splice into the power between the esc and receiver (not ideal)

My sound box will handle it and my led lights are 12volt so i should be god with it and my s3.

The JST connector on the stock TRX4 ESC is actual battery voltage. Since the HW1080 does not provide a battery tap, you can use an in-line adapter with a JST tap, between the battery plug and the ESC plug, to tap into battery voltage. The stock ESC battery tap is intended to power the 8028 LED power supply, the new 2262 BEC or any aftermarket BEC. Keep in mind that all the stock TRX4 electronics down stream of the ESC are rated at 6v so do not over power them if you want them to live.

Note: The Traxxas 8028 power supply is rated at 3v .5a output and is only designed to power the Traxxas 8030 LED kit. If you need to power your aftermarket LEDs at 6v you can install the 2262 BEC or an aftermarket BEC.

Glad u caught that voodoo, i never thought about his light voltage. BEC would be best bet for addin anything extra in all reality. Better safe than sorry

Yeah, BEC required. I didn't think of that at the time. I'm not familiar with the 1080 esc so didn't know the leads would unplug.

The end that plugs into the batt should come out of the plastic end. Thatd be the best place to tap into the wiring. Just solder on the jst n pop the wires back in the plug

Kind of coincidental, I made an in-line jumper from some XT60 plugs like the one Inspector86 linked to last night (before seeing this thread). Worked great, with full battery voltage run to a 12v light bar (I'm still a little blind from test!).

I was looking at the 3Brothers connector I have for my G13 like Tossedman just linked to, and it brought up a question. Isn't that connector only getting power from one cell through the jumper lead with only two wires (+ and -)? Or must there be some multi-cell bridging in their lead to get full 3S 11.1 voltage?

If it takes the 2 outside pins it gets voltage from all the cells. Only way to do it with out messing up the balancing of the cells.

This provides a nice clean battery voltage without adding any resistance or potential failure points to the primary voltage path to the ESC. With that JST plug there, you have lots of options. You can run something directly on battery voltage, switch it with an external receiver-controlled switch, and you can regulate it down to any voltage that you need via a buck converter (BEC).
