Steering Improvements

I have a 4 link front with cms and I don't experience any bump steer. It took a LOT of adjusting drag link lengths and also spacers where the drag link attaches to the tie rod. I can have my wheels turned lock to lock while cycling the suspension and they stay in position. One thing with using cms is that the servo loses a lot of torque because of the steering linkage angles that it might not be holding while turning and moving over uneven surfaces.

I'd love to see this on something like a touring car setup station to prove that your steering knuckles don't turn a single degree as you cycle your suspension. ALL suspension links operate on an arc, therefore as the suspension travels vertical in any amount the link will move whatever it's attached to horizontally. A triangulated 4 link is designed to keep your axle centered as the suspension cycles. As the drag link moves vertically the end attached to the knuckle moves horizontally. In order to eliminate bump steer you need to move the axle side to side at the same rate as your drag link.

By all means you can minimize your bump steer with cms/triangulated 4 link but the chances of eliminating it are pretty slim.

I'm sorry but that is incorrect on all points.
 
Well, maybe you guys don't agree, but I have no issues with steering at all. If anything, I would get a more powerful servo.


The torque you claim you are losing is because of the different arcs your axle travels in. If you added a properly setup trackbar/pan hard your steering would feel stronger because instead of trying to raise or lower the front of your truck it would be steering.
 
Ok, I just checked out my steering again. There's a touch over 1/8" (just a few degrees) of bump steer...CLEARLY not enough to make any noticeable difference running offroad.

The bump steer isn't the problem in that instance because we are not running high speeds, the problem comes into play when the front is bound and instead of steering it wants to raise or lower the suspension.
 
Lol I opened a can of worms, awesome lads, so along with cvd's, and metal upgrades to chubs and links, a pan hard will help steering as well without having to mod the axles?

This might be one way to go with xr10 axles getting hard to find or long waits for the hobby shop to get them in stock ,,Then paying almost 40.00 for them +shipp
 
ok lets not get carried away i just need help with this one little thing (or maybe its big, i don't know). the combo of my CMS and 4 link are causing less space to turn when at full flex... so should i just live with bad steering and just get OD gears, or is there something i can do?

Lol this thread every time I just about work out which way to go bam someone else comes in with a new idea,,,,the fun of being a noob "thumbsup"
 
so if there isn't really a solution to the bump steer issue I'm just gonna ditch the whole hi-clearance thing and just get OD gears...

An surely not, you wouldn't think companies would put heaps of money into developing these products if they didn't work word they? It will be a matter of engineering for sure, all things can be fixed....usually involve lots of $$$
