TRX4 Sport kit

What kind of grease do these portal boxes like to chew on? The standard junk we throw in trans and axial axles? Anything special better or worse on them? I can't imagine but better to cross my Ts and dot my Is

I use regular automotive grease in all of my kits. Will do the same on the sport when I build it. An 14oz tube is a long time supply for next to nothing compared to “RC grease”. If there is a reason not to I’d like to know as well.

I don't like anything too thick in TRX4 axles, the resistance of heavy grease adds up between the diff gears and portal gears. Vanquish grease is my go to these days because it stays on better than the typical wheel bearing grease everyone uses without being too thick.

What would your opinion on white lithium grease for assembly of 1:1 engines be? I used to use that in my maxx trucks.

White lithium should work fine, most of them aren't too thick and tend to stay on the gears. Run it and check on the gears after a few runs, if it is still coating the gears and hasn't broken down then keep running it. Not sure how it holds up to water and protecting corrosion since I haven't used it in a real long time.

I used to swear by the Lucas Red & Tacky and used it for a bunch of trucks. When it came time for maintenance, I found the grease had broken down and wasn't coating the gears so I sought out something better.

I don't know what kind of grease they sell specific for RC parts, but Yamaha makes a 'liquid' type of grease for outboard motors and equipment that I inherited from that activity, and it's perfect. You don't want something that runs out, but you don't want a heavy wheel grease in there either.

being unfamiliar with the gearing really, I have a roc412 3100 kv laying around and a mamba. May as well throw it in. I was planning on a 13t pinion, is that a fairly decent starting spot for these for middle of the road, but leaning toward more toward crawler than anything?

The Axial grease that's included with the SCX10 II kit is surprisingly good. The Vanquish grease is also good. I wish I knew the OEMs of both.

I used to use the red and tacky marine grease, but that stuff is too sticky IMO. It adds considerable drag to a transmission unless you only dab the gears with the lightest of coatings.

My kit shipped today from MN...due Monday 3-18. "thumbsup"

EDIT: So...which motor? Is the stock TRX a 21 or 27 turn motor? How is gearing? I want a rock crawler so slower is better. I can always install a smaller pinion...
What is final gearing like? Do they gear down the portals too? Or ???

Found it...page 4-5 here. Are they all 32 pitch gears? Are people finding they are too fast or too slow with stock gearing and 21T motor?

There should be MSDS on the grease. The MSDS would tell you the supplier.

Sweet! Holmes has a brushed 550 motor option. The Traxxas motor for the TRX-4 is 21T.

I always forget that "hack"! Thanks for the reminder. I don't think either company has the MSDS online though.

Does the TRX-4 kit include grease from Traxxas? If so how's that?

Has anybody tried that Cow RC Udder Butter grease? Thoughts?

Overpriced like any RC labeled grease. People like it for gear grease but I've read that it's really thick. No personal experience though.

So the Axial grease and Vanquish grease is good but its not available at my LHS (go figure). Lots of Udder Butter though!

Anything else from the auto world that may work? Any other RC grease that's good?

Marine grease works fine. It's just really tacky, but it sticks to everything and it's good if you run in water.

I know some people use some Mobil 1 and some Lucas. There are entire threads elsewhere on this site.

Here's one of those threads: http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/tools-procedures/456663-lets-talk-grease.html

does anyone know if the tires in the kit are softer than the tires that come with a rtr ?
