TSS based FJ40 Build

R1 - I've been watching this thread for for a while now and working on my HiLift based FJ as well. This this turned out phatnasty! I' m stoked just checking it out. I have my work cut out for me now! MUCH RESPECT!"thumbsup"

Mini update...

Cory sent me the grille that he had made. Originally I had wanted to sandwich a backing plate behind the grille and trap a cut out body in between. Due to the nature of the bushwacker body, that plan just did not work out and the grille did not lay flat enough on it to look right. I had hacked the body up too much to put a plate behind with the grille poking through...so I had to punt a little. What I ended up doing was making a whole new panel for the front that will attach to the remaining lexan.

I painted it up, and am waiting for it to dry all the way. I think that it should look pretty decent when it is all said and done.

looking forward to seeing the final shots of the grill finished.
body color backing plate, white grill i assume?

Yep, the back panel is body color and the grille is white. It looks good together. It will look sweet with the Toyota grill insert and the faux headlights on...

Sort of... :)

I spent the last week getting my GC-1 WK rig going so I would have something to play with. Hopefully I can get this thing finished up soon. There are only so many spare hours in a day...

Hooray! A little bit of progress. Yet another side track...I built a AX-10 comp ready rig for a friend. Fun build...but kept me from the FJ for a little longer.

Well, the grille is done. Cory made this for me a while back and I am pretty happy with it. The Bushwacker body is hard to deal with in the grille area. My original plan did not work and I ended up having to make a plate for the whole front section. This grille would work better if I had cut the outline perfectly out of the body and then put some mountings behind the lexan body...live and learn.

With this grille, one could easily mount lights in it and put some real mesh behind it for an awsome look. For the sake of getting this thing done and the fact that this rig is not intended to be the "ultimate" scaler, I chose to just use some decals behind it to simmulate the lights and the grille mesh. I am happy with it.

I have finished detailing the body as well. Did the rolled down window trick. Also, I tinted the back windows to hide the fact that I won't have an interior on this one (at least for now). I used a sharpie to detail the panel lines as well as the silver hinges. I also painted the rear flares on the outside which gave them a nice texture.

On the chassis side of things, I relocated the upper mounts on the rear shocks. On my initial run the rear just seemed too soft and wanted to twist up a good bit. By standing the shocks up more the springs become more effective. The downside is some reduced travel. It is still plenty...especially when you consider it is meant to be a scaler. The difference is noticable by feel. I think this will be the ticket.

It is getting mighty close. With some luck, I may be able to get it out on the rocks some time in the next week. Then I can get some shots in it's natural habitat. "thumbsup"

Body looks great man nice work, grill came out nice.

Thanks!

I got the FJ out on the rocks today. It drives pretty nice and is super scale looking when cruising around. It handles and climbs pretty well, but due to the narrow track and heavy roof rack, it is a little top heavy. That adds to the challenge I guess. The tubes are doing thier job and protecting the body pretty well. They are starting to get some good rash on them though...battle scars. ;-)

I snapped a few pics today while it was still in a semi-pristine condition. :)

this build turned out awesome. You really did a great job taking a lexan body and making it really scale. Beautiful.

Seeing it in person yesterday was very impressive! Absolutely awesome work, very clean, and very functional. Definitely a great build. "thumbsup"

that thing looks killer!
your package is getting sent today ;)
what about outlining the door hinges and "doting" the hinge bolts with sharpie?
maybe down the road you think you might cutout the headlights and grill and do them up? id like to see it.
still calling first dibs on this thing....

Very cool. That package contains the "finishing touches" for this rig.

Yes, I was thinking of doing something with the hinges...just have not figured out how I want to go about it just yet.

Hey gang,

I have not been able to work on this for a while, but got a little time this weekend to do a couple of new additions. First up is a Warn winch. Cory and I worked up a trade where he made a few winch bodies and I turned the outer pieces on the lathe. He debued them at the Scale Nats, but I don't think there are going to be more. They came out pretty nice and I got a chance to get mine together, finally. I think it gives the front a nice completed look.

The next little project was adding some locking hubs to the wheels...I also got these parts from The Scale Shop. They were pretty straightforward to detail and install. I painted them semi-gloss black and used a silver Sharpie for the detail. I also painted the lug nuts with the pen while I was at it.

I hope to get some time to shoot some video on the rocks over the next couple of weeks, but things have been busy lately. I also plan on installing some of the new 90mm RC4WD scale double spring shocks on the rear as well.
