I had to take a break from RC. I was suddenly spending money destined for my kids who were still small at the time, and coming up with excuses as to why the money was spent. I found myself with all my RC stuff, and my kids asking me when they were getting their things, then feeling like the worst dad in the world and very selfish. On top of all that, when I was trying to rehab my addiction by involving my kids (6 and 4 at the time), I took them out to drive their RC's and wouldn't you know, they had each broken their radios when they were playing with them. One wouldn't accelerate, the other wouldn't turn. In frustration, I tossed the 2 radios and gave them a lecture. After that, would begin my 4 years out of the hobby.
Now, my son is 9 and my daughter is 11, and one of the radios I bought to replace one of theirs was never opened. I cleaned out my garage which took a week (tons of junk in there), and I stumbled upon our RC stuff. Literally was left there from the day we tried to drive that one time, along with the unopened radio. I setup some shelves in the garage to get all our clutter up, and found I had an extra set of shelves I could dedicate to our RC's. I shelved all of the RC's and thought to myself "maybe now its time to get back into this with them, with a new perspective on the hobby". So, I dusted off all those old RC tools, cracked open my sons Traxxas Grave Digger and replaced that receiver and bound the radio. Checked all the batteries and made sure they were good. I lost 3 Lipo's due to improper storage, but my Venom Lipo and my sons Traxxas Nimh hump pack were still good! Charged up his battery and took my son out to teach him how to drive.
He asked me during that session "Thanks dad! I'm really glad I can drive my RC now. I'm sorry for breaking my radio years ago. It would be really cool if you brought out the Ruckus (ECX Ruckus 2wd) and drove with me!" I had to remind him that he broke my radio too, when I had it on the dinner table and he was trying to twirl it like a pistol lol. But, I still had my RTR radio from my Savage Flux HP. So, took its receiver and dropped it into the Ruckus and I was back in action. Some upgrades didn't hold, and I ended up replacing my MIPs that ripped themselves apart with some new metal drive shafts, and upgraded my front steering blocks to aluminum. Since that one time, we make it a point to drive a few times a week when we're able to.
I feel like RC reared up its head at a time when I'm concerned my kids are sitting in front of the screen too much (video games, tablets, phones etc etc). Now I can show them a fun hobby with electronics that allows us to be outside. And.... I have a strict code when it comes to spending on parts and upgrades now so I don't go overboard like I did before. My focus is on driving and having a good time first, maintenance second, upgrades when there's extra money. I have a lot to teach him and my oldest daughter about running and maintaining their RC's. Hell, even my 4 year old is excited to get her RC!
While we're enjoying our bashers, and we love how fast they go! We want to do things that are more technical... so, we're getting into crawling, and I'm dusting off my Wraith for now. I plan on buying some low priced crawlers and upgrading them slowly. So, when tax time rolls around, I'm looking at buying 3 Redcat Everest 10's (was only going to be 1, then it grew to 2, now its 3. After the 4 year old sees them, it'll be 4 Everest 10's lol). And those will be our on going active projects.
Bottom line, I got really addicted with RC learning everything I could in a short amount of time. I forgot what was most important... having a blast just driving around. And now, I get to have fun with my kids driving RC's. I guess... thats what was missing. Yeah, I got pretty extreme with things, but now its all in perspective, thanks to my kids.
