Wolf Creek/Speedweigand Garage/Service Station

Most excellent work as always"thumbsup"

Looks like you have the garage on a fast track to completion. Loving the attention to detail as always with your builds.

I'm going to have to send you a couple boxes of 30-30 rounds to get rid of that pesky moose... He ends up clomping around in every build you do. Time for some Moose steaks on the B-B-Q:twisted:

Great work"thumbsup"

Thanks! I wanted to name it something clever like, Joe's garage but you already thought of that one.

I've had a number of critters showing up in this project. might need to set some traps.

Not too sure how clever Joes Garage actually is, but if that T-Rex keeps hanging around your establishment you might want to look into training him to stand on the roof and place your fuel and oil orders through Sinclair Petroleum so you can have all the little Dino signs to go with the T-Rex.

I waivered for a long time on the Sinclair theme. I wanted to go retro... but I was really liking the red/yellow/white colors... so Shell... or McDonalds.

Lame update:

Doing a LOT of sanding, painting the prefab winders, working on the store front pieces, bevelling the edges, fitting, etc. I can't glue them till the floor is finished. I sanded it smooth, restained & using epoxy fiberglass resin to finish the top surface. I didn't care for the dark gray entry ways so I've been photoshopin' some tile, I like this retro B/W checkered theme although I totally botched the scale, but I just printed a bunch of ideas out on paper. I'll adjust the scale, print to vinyl sticker sheet & make a styrene sub floor. After much ado, I settled on a font for the roof sign & found a place on the interweb that will laser cut them. I guess I could done them on the scroll saw... Trying to go for an old 50's/60's look... not sure if I got it but letters are on their way.

Garage is coming along nice. but the dinosaur reminded me of this.
Harold's Auto and gas station. Springhill Florida. grew up just a few miles from here.

Originally a Sinclair gas station in 1964, stands 47 feet tall and is 110 feet long.

Man, I love that kind of stuff. Florida has some of the best too. That's the problem with kids these days... they've lost the connection between oil and dinos.

On a roll last night... found some old guns & roses CDs, reminisced, got on a roll, It was 2am before I knew it.
I put several layers of epoxy fiberglass resin on the floor, sanding between coats to create a level surface. Final coat was polished down to a finish I am pleased with:

Then I put some "glass" in the big window on the store front piece. This is the same technique as with the inside window that looks out into one of the garage bays. I framed it up & put basswood strips in, painted, then put .03" clear lexan in, then glued basswood strips on the other side. The outside is still unfinished. But painting the basswood pieces first, I could put the large plate glass window in with canopy glue & have a nice clean painted edge between the glass & frame.

Next was to epoxy in the remaining walls. Staring to take shape now...

I let the epoxy set up on the left and right walls and then used my cam straps to winch the center piece into place. My meticulous 100% accurate CAD drawings balanced out with my inpatient at best, half a$$ wood working and I even surprised myself with how closely it all fit together. I'll need to sand a little here and there but... good enough for government work for sure.

Once I got this far, I could help seeing what the windows & door frames look like in there respective holes. I'll be cutting up 3/4" x 1.5" 3/32" basswood to make a cinder block facad but this is how it looks now with windows. Yes... red windows, White block, light gray mortar inbetween the blocks & some yeller in there somewhere.

Thanks guys! I don't envision finishing it this year. My goal is to get it looking good enough to get it out in the rocks this summer & then go back to work on it next fall. Originally, next winter was going to be interior work but... the garage doors are going to be time consuming and it's starting to warm up here & I still need to get a few trucks working.

I got the bulk of the sanding & painting done this weekend. a few little spots to touch up here & there but over the hump for sure. Couple of pics:

I painted the exterior light gray. Then started putting a few blocks on to see how it looked. The 3/32" looks a bit thicker than I thought it would..... but I have 80K board feet of 3/32" basswood...

Here is where I left it last night:

IMG_0044_zps9cce797a.jpg

So.. the 3/32" thick block did look better once I got a larger patch of it done but still looked too clean or straight or something or maybe just too much like little pieces of wood glued to plywood.

IMG_0060_zps4ca90c7d.jpg

So... goop to the rescue. Slather it on thick & wedge it down into all the cracks and crevices.

IMG_0064_zpsa337a4ae.jpg

Then, I used a wet towel to wipe off the inxs. Use a scale concrete mortar smoothing device, like a wet finger, to smooth out the grooves.

IMG_0074_zps171b19e1.jpg

Let it dry & trim out the windows & any offending basswood block.

IMG_0075_zps4c95dab8.jpg

I then painted my "goop mortar" with a light gray.

IMG_0086_zps79a3f374.jpg

Once that dries, or if your impatient like me, before it dries, hit the top with off white using a little trim paint roller.

As with anything repetitively tedious, you refine your technique so it makes sense to start in an area in the back that you won’t see so that by the time you get to the front, you’ve learned from your mistakes. I didn’t do that. But… In my own defense, goop is spackle & I’m using latex interior paint so it’s pretty reversible.

I need to go back and put a second layer of spackle on and work on getting smoother joints. Also, I found that painting the entire thing gray & then just a very light rolling of white is key. It doesn’t take much extra paint on the roller to blob down in the mortar.

Wolf Creek....u sure have tallent, i really enjoy looking at the pics and vids.....make me want to drive there :-)

The block came out great. I like how the mortar left the edge of the block uneven, would never know there wood in that last pic.

Thanks! I've been working on the scale block look. I'm pretty happy with it now just tedious... all work no play makes jack a dull boy.

Thanks guys... got a little behind on this one... too many other projects going on.

Lame update... at least it will look like a lame update. For me, it's a stellar update. Last night I glued the last fricken' small rectangular piece of basswood on.

I am now working on fitting the roofs in & there will be a little block facad trim work but then I will be working on the awning. I had the letters laser cut from 1/8" wood. I have a small scroll saw but... enough self inflicted punishment.
