| Exhaust question
So I have a 1992 Chevy s10 (ironic isn't it?) I got from my grandpa that my dad and I are fixing up, and I wanted to cut the muffler off, or put a glass pack on it. Well my dad won't let me... It's there anything I can do to make it must, but not too loud? Just so that I can aurally had the engine? Would cutting off the catalytic converter do anything? Thanks for the help! Put a Magnaflow or something like that on it. Cutting the cat off won't make any sound increase (very slightly, if any). If you have a resonator on it, cut that off and put a straight pipe instead, but you'll probably get a buzzy, raspy sound without it.

What one? I want to hear the exhaust, but not be to loud to the point where I can have conversations in the cab, but when I step on it, it'll sound cool. What size would be the best? Sent from my ZTE V768 using Tapatalk 2 |

Depends on what size piping you have, and what length of body you want (or need).

what motor? 4cyl, 2.8, or 4.3 v6? deleting the cat will increase the noise a bit, but keep in mind it will reduce backpressure too. then also keep in mind that increasing pipe diameter will also decrease it. too little backpressure MIGHT give a slight increase in top end horsepower production, but will KILL midrange torque. it is kinda pointless to do too much to the exhaust without increasing the fuel coming in or you will lose power in the quest for a faster "sounding" vehicle. throw a 2 chamber flowmaster on it and be done with it... good tone and you wont need too much in the way of intake to balance it out |

I had a reg cab 03 Silverado with the 4.8 and quite a bit of motor work done with the race series 30 flowmaster. It sounded mean but at freeway speeds there was alittle drone but nothing horrible. I would recommend youtubing exhaust sounds for your year and model tuck to get a feel for what you looking at. But that's just my .02. Also I was running 2.75" tube to duel 18x3 tips.

For what you're wanting to do a standard parts store "turbo" muffler will suffice. Nice and mellow at cruising speed but full throttle it'll liven up.

if everything else is intact, not needing to be replaced and a little more noise is all you are looking for, check into an open type aircleaner housing lid. the throttle body type fuel injection on those old s10's were very similar to carburators as far as the air cleaners go... 89 S10 Tahoe Pickup - Cold Air Intake question? - S-10 Forum take a look at the 2nd pic down... the edelbrock filter will give a bit more air flow, but will allow all of the intake noise be heard. you wont notice anything different at idle, but under full throttle, it will roar |

It's got a 4.3 v6. Lots of info! I've seen a k&n intake with the paper air filter and 2 discs that bolt down just like the stock one, but with out the cold air intake. I'll look into this stuff! Thanks! Sent from my ZTE V768 using Tapatalk 2 |

shouldn't be much louder than stock but will be less restrictive. For what your after it should work good..Dont let the price fool you. its s decent muffler but they do rust. Walker dynomax is an option for basicly the same turbo type muffler as an alternative but its more money 35-40 dollars...same performance though. Don't let grandpa know ..he already said no. the key with k&n filters is you only buy it once... you clean and re-use it rather than spend $20-30 every time it gets dirty. so when you take that into account, 130 isnt that outta line. i would say start there before you go hacking up your exhaust if you dont need to. every body happy... you get the louder truck, dad stays happy with the exhaust the way it is... and if you get pulled by the cops, the air filter is legal no matter what, where as you can be up shit creek if you cut off the cat. converter...

A Flowmaster 40 would be my choice for a muffler, you can also go to a high-flow cat, which will make more noise, but keep you legal. If you do one of the "Cold Air Intakes" get one that uses a paper filter, and keep in mind that it really isnt going to do anything for performance. The K&N filters suck, they get dirty quickly(around 1,000 miles) and they don't stop all the debris from entering your engine. Can't tell you how many engines I have worked on that are low on compression, because some hillbilly went down to autozone and got him one of those there racin' car filters. |

i have 20+ years turning wrenches on cars, trucks, and motorcycles and never had a problem with a k&n... the only thing i can see causing that is extremely dusty intake air. if infact you are regularly running offroad with an open element air filter, use your head and pick up a pre-filter. outerwears sells them in a bunch of shapes and sizes. they work pretty good at deflecting splashes too

My truck already has cold air intake, very restrictive, and I think that's why it doesn't... Go It uses the circular style on the top of the engine, with a very small oval tube (like 2x6 inches) that goes to the grill, but the part where it gets air is filled by a price of plastic. It's almost like whoever designed it didn't want it to get air. It also has a paper filter. If I go the filter route, I just want the 2 discs that clamp the filter to the intake, so I have 360* air intake. The muffler would kinda be nicer since it's cheaper. I don't want to put a whole lot of cash into it just because we have already spent too much on body repair, and haven't even painted it yet. Here's a pic Sent from my ZTE V768 using Tapatalk 2 |

trying to keep it cheap...? take your air filter out and go to the local pep boys (or junkyard) and find a filter housing lid the size of your filter element. that should leave an inch or so exposed completely around the filter, and then toss the restrictive tubing attached to the intake in the trash if you do go this route, dont say i recommended it... lol. the lid might be a buck or two at the junkyard...
