Default 04sti20's scx10 tundra truggy build

So I've been wanting to share my WIP with you guys for a while now. I know I know " what??!, another tundra truggy!" Haha they are popular I guess. I was inspired by all the tundra truggys I've seen on here. Ok so here we go. Any questions please reply or pm. I'm more than willing to help.

- First I bought the front cab of the tundra with the grill, lights, tinted window, and clear light parts. So they don't sell the "back cab" that fills in the back under the window so I had to make one. I got a piece of 1/8" styrene from a LHS and some glue that permanently bonds all plastics, sorry I forgot the name I will post it later, but it works really well. I still have to bondo it up to give it a clean look.

-Here's a shot of the chassis, the side rails I have I made my self using 1/8" steel rod, but I have to make new ones because thats how I'm going to attach the body by using the holes in the doors and using small screws, the front bumper is also going to be redone using 1/16" steel plate.

-Ok so here was my next step on the body, attaching the grill and lights. I noticed that the grill and lights required a small tube like spacer with screws to attach them to the body, since this wasnt bought as a kit I obviously didn't get all the mounting hardware. Here's what I did. The four plastic pieces that stick through the inside Of the body are long, as you can see on the left, what I did was marked them off while I had it together and cut them flush with the body it self, as you can see to the right, what this does is allow you to use a smaller screw with a washer to attach it.

Here's the screw and washer, the washer is from the stock honcho's truggy bed that attaches the front body to the back.

Here's the end result.

And for the lights I kinda did the same thing. I marked the round pieces off ad cut them flush, but to secure them I used a small piece of lexan( I would've used a smooth piece but all I had was from the honcho's bed) and the screws that holds the lexan to the honchos bed. I used an existing hole and made the other hole with the body hole tool. Here's what I got.

After cutting it to size this is what I got.

So far that's what I got.

Thanks for posting these pics. I had no idea how I was going to mount my grill and light. Also looking forward to how your build turns out. Keep up the good work.

No problem. I got all the parts from the stock body. Cheap and free pretty much. Thanks

Ok so I've never brazed anything before. I've soldered stuff mostly electrical. I'm actually a welder for a living and I mainly use mig and taught myself how to tig weld so I have some background but even someone with out experience can pick it up easy. I've made things out of solid rod before with tig but never brazed brake line haha. So here's my first practice piece at brazing and what I used
Materials:
- 3/16" uncoated brake line
- mapp gas with a pinpoint torch head
- radnor saftey silv 45%
Practice piece.

And what I used:

Brake like- auto zone
Mapp gas and pinpoint torch- Home Depot or lowes
Safety silv 45- airgas(welding supply store) I found it at Home Depot online only. The people who work there don't know anything about welding/ brazing.

Lookin good,I like your idea for attaching the grill and lights.I was wondering how I was going to do it.Is it just me or does this body seem out of scale? The hood seems way to short compared to the rest of the truck. And the wheel wells are kinda small,I hacked mine bigtime to get the tires to fit on full compression.Keepin an eye on this one.

Thanks. Yea It kinda does seem big. I did notice that when articulating (to test it) that the wheels want to hit the fenders. I probably won't hack it up at first. I was thinking of lighting the truck a few cm's but I don't want it to handle poorly.

I do like the idea of cutting the fenders a bit and making a tube chassis to fit the line of the cut fender.

I think the hood matches pretty good I used to own a tundra with this body style. It has a smallish hood. Compared to ford Chevy and dodge anyway.

Does anyone have bumper ideas for the tundra. I want something like a solid steel plate bumper that's able to mount a winch to. Something custom I'm talking about.

That is definitely a possibility. I would probably add a small brush bar. I like the stinger hoops but only on wranglers like my 1:1

Next step in the build. Bondo the rear to make blend. Next step is sanding then finally paint.

So after I started sanding the bondo down I realized it sucks, haha. Bondo does not stick well to plastic. I just had some left over so I figured I'd try it, guess I was wrong. I went to a LHS and got a thick liquid type of filler that's sand able and paint able. It also is supposed to go on thinner so filling small spaces in shouldn't be a problem.
