| Scx10 Open Front Diff?
Hey guys. Thinking about putting an open front diff in my SCX10. It's basically a tow rig. The tires are only 3 inches tall so I'm obviously not worried too much about performance. My question is has anyone even done this? How did you like it? Does it help with the turning radius? Just wondering if id like it. Thanks guys!

It seriously limits offroad performance IMO... I was surprised just how much in my FOFF truck and a basher I built at one time. I do think it helps a ton in handeling of a fast rig but that's about the only bennifit... and jumping. It would help to not break stuff when landing. But for any type of crawler, stay locked. If you want better turning radius, Over Drive/Under Drive gears help a lot. |

I've never messed around with overdrive or under drive gears. I'm basically just trying to have a scale looking, scale driving truck. I'll have to look into gears though. Any other input? |

If you use the truck as a towing rig then I am guessing you are more likely to be a trail kinda guy rather than a crawler guy. In which case do no bother with the under and over drive gears. These are a specifically crawler performance upgrade and would not be helpful for trails at all. As already said - if you are going to be doing any kind of speed then open front could be good for you & your steering, otherwise stick with locked front. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

The tiniest amount of searching will net you dozens of results telling you Axial has diff gears for an open diff. And HPI does also, which fits.

If you do get the Axial/HPI diff gears, you need the gray diff cup shims or you'll have spider gear binding.

For a scale looking, scale driving truck like pictured above, I'd unlock both diffs, since it looks like that one will never see a dirt road in its life. And I don't mean that in a bad way at all.

Kyosho blizzard ev diff looks like it will fit. I have both and can check for you when we get home from the hospital.

I ran the ShopTruck with open front diff and had a blast doing it!!! It was a super light rig with WAY too much power and I did it to try and make it handle worth a flip (didnt work) but it made for an interesting trail rig. Very easy to do, just grab the AX10 open diff setup and go! Matt |

That tiny bit of searching would also tell you how people like it. But we do need more threads about the same thing... so, alright. |

i have done it in my Scx XJ. open front, locked rear. setup like an XJ too, narrowed wraith front axle, panhard, divorced coil/shock, leaf rear, cut down 1.9 treps. i keep up with stock scx trucks on trails no worries at all, but i also have a much more realistic setup, so to say it drives realistically is an understatement. |

I didn't notice much improvement in turning radius with an open front diff. But with an open rear and locked front there is an improvement. Almost as good as OD/UD gears. One other major benefit to steering I noticed was during reversing. So if you plan on using your truck to pull a trailer then I would suggest an open rear diff. Makes reversing much easier. Besides the open rear diff hurts off road performance less than an open front one. Only downside is that it is a bit tricky on climbs. You have to be careful not to spin the fronts or your front will slide to one side because the open rear wont keep you inline. |
