That's exactly what I'm doing. the width of the backer piece varies though, depending on available space. All I've done is shorten bodies, and I've used pieces of the cut out pieces for said backers.

I use the tape on the outside to hold the pieces together, and then use those spring clamps (when I can) to hold the pieces down, it helps take out air bubbles between the pieces, which (in my mind) make for a better bond.

Beautiful truck, I have joined body halves like that myself. Only thing I did was paint the body first then cut and join. I used E6000 and product like ShoeGoo only better, then I used Drywall mesh tape as a backer. It held up great on an FJ-40 that saw alot of use. I got the body used and already painted, and thought it might not attach well but it worked great.

I use the fiberglass drywall tape and shoe goo to reinforce my basher bodies on my short course trucks, makes the bodies last 10 times longer

Hi, quick question, is your chassis pinched in at the front and back? The SCX10 skid is wider than the cross members? I've got a TCS-x-trail and it doesn't pinch (the rails are just flat) so my shocks tend to bind up :S

Yes, it does pinch in the same as a stock scx10 does, since I used all the stock scx10 cross braces. It's not a lot, but it makes a big difference in shock angles.

I didn't do any bending to the rails, I just bolted them to the skid, then flexed the rails in snug to the cross braces to bolt them in.
