Actually it isn't that difficult it just takes some time. Looks like you have the skills to make it happen. Just a tip if you stack up 1.5mm styrene and take a dremel you can form pretty much anything you want. Here is a pic of my fenderwells. I plan on doing the same thing to the front fenderwells also.

Just put your mind to it and with your talent you can make it happen."thumbsup"

ahh so thats how you did it huh? i looked and looked at that to figure it out. sounds good so ill give it a try, and that toolbox is really clean looking, is that diamond plate tape or just painted diamond plate?

Eviltwin_52s 03-04-2007 05:34 PM

The Diamond plate is styrene... and I just learned that instead of paint if you use house hold Aluminum Foil and clear it. It will look much more scale looking, however it is really fragile until you clear it.

Just measure the bed rails and cut the styrene to fit. I start with a piece of cardboard this way if you make a mistake with your practice piece you can make your adjustments before you cut the final product.
The basic shape was like the roof on a house and tapers down.

taylor smith 03-05-2007 01:39 PM

thanks, and uh whats styrene?

obijuan 03-05-2007 02:49 PM

plastic.

Pinion help needed!

i got a big question, i have finally saved enough for an R2 and i need to know which is a good pinion to run for a trail rig with wheel speed the priority here. i was looking at the dimensions and my frame rails are exactly as wide as the R2! go figger!! i didnt even plan it out like that just like the body ride height. it just fits. so... what pinion do i need? i got a 55t integy with it.

BOWTIE 03-05-2007 07:32 PM

great build but i think you should mount the rear shocks just like the real trucks. one in opposite direction from the other..

That is the million dollar question. As I have the tranny as well, however I am running the Hyperion Brushless Z3013 motor. Some have told me that based on the motor and battery that possibly the 8T pinion may be enough or if you bump up in battery it will give you more wheel speed or possibly a larger pinion. So I may be stocking up on different tooth pinions as well.

obijuan 03-05-2007 07:56 PM

i see, it will be a six cell stick so maybe a 12t?

RPP Hobby 03-05-2007 08:10 PM

Nice work! I wish I had the time to do that type of body work. I barely have time to paint nowadays. I can appriciate the tim eyou have into that. "thumbsup"

Nice build! I really love the clod....wish i could find one!

I have an R2 tranny in my comp 2.2 buggy. I put the 8 tooth pinion on it when i got it with my 55 turn motor, and it was very slow. Had no wheel speed to hop up over anything when needed. So I changed to a 15 tooth pinion and I really like this setup, it still has plenty of tourque, and it also has plenty of wheel speed for me now.

So I would suggest that you start with at least a 15 tooth pinion on the R2 and see how that works!

obijuan 03-06-2007 09:35 PM

cool will do, i got one on the way! hoping it will be here by the middle of next week, i gotta make a few trips to the LHS as well so youll see some updates after my fullsize rig is ready to go.

Crawlin Around 03-06-2007 10:36 PM

What size square tubing did you use for the frame? How did you cut it so straight?

obijuan 03-07-2007 05:51 AM

yup 1/2 inch. i used a bender to bend it first then i used a bandsaw right down the middle.

Crawlin Around 03-07-2007 08:56 AM

damn I did good then because I left and got the same thing for my 'burb and portaband or just bandsaw? If you don't mind can I copy your frame design? If so do you have to scale pics or like measurments I can use? One more thing can you make resin casts?

obijuan 03-07-2007 09:06 AM

well i just eyeballed it really. its too long for a burb but uhhh resin wouldnt be as good as steel IMO.
have at it, i copied the fram design from chevrolet so i guess its not a problem! lol
if it cuts like a hacksaw youre in good shape. heres a link on chassis specs you could use. its pretty handy, i didnt use it but its very close to what mine is like.
