Default "Angel of Death"

My buddy Parkflier and I are on a mission to build a pair of NASTY Class 3 rigs for the 2015 Scale Comp season.

He has started Project "Iron Maiden"...(I need to get him to post a build thread! )

In keeping with the Heavy Metal theme, my new build has been named "Angel of Death", and I'm hoping this rig can live up to such an iconic song name (by Slayer for those who don't know! lol)!

Its going to be a full tube chassis with custom formed body. Design ques will be LOOSELY taken from 1950's era Cadillacs. Complete with nasty big fins. Treated to the typical Class 3 / TTC body mods such as Pinching, Dovetailing and maybe Boatsides.
It will be a 4 seater, Losi Axles (of course! ), 4 Wheel Steer and 14" WB.

Also plan on trying a Direct Drive motor setup with T-Case....If that doesn't work out, a typical Metal Gear LNC Trans will be run.

Here is the Direct Drive Mock-Up...not much to it!

Smoothed out a stock Losi Skid. Going to cut in half and mount to a stock LNC Battery Tray...That whole assembly will in fact be my new "Skid Plate".
Upper links mount to the old battery tray frame mounts. Giving me the 14" WB i'm after.

Sliced out the middle section of some Uni-Strut

Built a Jig to weld in some tube sleeves and mounted them to skid. This now gives me a good place to start the Rock Slider / Floorpans and tube work.

Guys in Europe are experimenting with this in the 2.2S class. I'm gonna give it a whirl as a scaler!

Trying a different method of mounting shocks. Keeping them inboard and away from the tires. I plan on running a droop suspension with heavy oil. Another competitor / friend of mine has been doing similar with great results!

Let the tube work begin!

Are you sure the chassis is Class 3 legal?
Doesn't it need frame rails that extend almost to axles?
I'd have to read the rules to know for sure... and it's 7:30 am so time for bed!

EDIT: I guess the tube is the chassis and the skid is just mounted different...?

Its going to be a full tuber and the body / cage will extend beyond the wheelbase.

As for the skid? Yeah its just a little different. Rectangular instead of square.

• Class 3 body minimum specs: Rock sliders, mirrors, etc do not count in these measurements: - The distance between the inside of the tires (of any axle) can be no greater than 1.25" more than the width of the body at the doors. *Example* (7" inside-of-tire to inside-of-tire = body must be 5.75" wide). - The body must be at least 5" wide from the front to the rear of the doors.
- Tire height can be no more than 0.5" taller than cab height. Height is measured from the bottom of the skid to the top of the bodywork/tube not including a light bar. (5.5" tire = 5" tall from bottom of skid to top of cab/tubework) - Body must be at least as long as the wheelbase of the vehicle. • Body modifications including, but not limited to, pinched front, dove-tailing and boat-siding are permitted as long as the final dimensions comply with the minimum

I keep a copy of the current rules on my bench! Lol

Nope body needs to be same legnth as the wheel base. Interpreting that how you see fit is up to. You

A little more tube work and some 16ga steel Rock Sliders / Floorpans

For now, using a flux core MIG welder to tack all pieces together.

This perforated metal strapping will act as a backer for the front grill and bumper.

Also brazed in the hood and front fender bars. Should round out and contour nice for the aluminum body.

Love your builds! Love the way you think outside the box! Since my losi sporty gets no driving anymore, you have inspired me to build a class 3 rig out of it! I'm in parts collection stage right now!

Keep it! Scale comps are a blast! Both Tgreer and mikro383, I can't rave enough on the performance of my Losi scalers! As you both know, the Losi Crawlers were first and foremost "comp minded" rigs! Keeping the Losi geometry and components is a no brainer for me!

Fabbed up a heavy duty brow ridge / visor out of 16ga steel!

This will also double as a light bar mount...

Re-Installed drivetrain and suspension! Time to get this beast rolling and shake out the bugs before paint and detail work begins!

Damn the stance is sexy!

Hahahaha. Yes....I'm doing some limiting straps!

I hav'nt run these batteries yet, but on paper...they should work just fine.

They are Airsoft batteries. 1200mah, 2S, 25 to 50c
Going to run them saddle pack style low in the frame with a series wye connector for 1200mah 4S.

Lol. I thought you might go for a battery tray in style.....
performance wise not the best option I guess. ;)

Awesome rig man. Like to see how your panels turn out.
keep it up.

THAT is an awesome idea I didn't think about! Its too late to change now without major reworking, but had I taken steps to hide ESC, RX and BEC elsewhere, I would have done it!
Right now, the coffin will be built and permanently mounted to hide all those electronics. But removable coffin battery cases would have been sweet!

Hmmmm. Maybe its not too late... Now I want to leave work early! Haha thanks!
