| How To Build a Torsion Chassis
I finally got around to building another torsion based chassis and thought I'd share it with you! Torsion chassis are the most simple chassis to work around and in my opinion some of the more fun to crawl. They are 100% spring free which takes a lot of tweaking and fine tuning out of the equation, which can be good if done right...or horribly wrong if screwed up! I have tried 4 different materials when experimenting with torsion chassis. 1. Channeled aluminum 2. Delrin 3. Flat stock aluminum 4. ABS plastic They all worked out, but the one that really performed right away was the ABS plastic. The others were too rigid in my opinion, and I had considered honing off some material to get more flex...but found ABS and was hooked. Here is what you will need for the build: Channeled ABS flat plastic (Lowes) 3/16 Brake line (one rod) Dremel or similar Tube cutter or similar 2" x 1/8" stick of Aluminum (About 1 foot will be plenty) (4) 1" screws 3/16" is what I chose (10) Nuts for the screws Axial Tranny Axial Axles And all your electrics Step One Mark your ABS plastic to length, I set my wheelbase to 12.25" so I cut my plastic to 12.75". Cut the plastic straight across and de-burr the edges using your dremel and a sanding wheel. Step Two Find the middle of the stick and place a center mark. Now grab your tranny and do a quick mock up by setting the tranny over the mark you just made. This is how you will know how to cut the holes for your drive shafts to go through. You will need to allow about 3/4" on each side of your tranny for stability before you cut through. I made the holes about 1 1/2 inches in length to allow for flex. Step Three Now that you know where to cut your holes for the shafts..go ahead and mark them and using your dremel cut them out. After you are done cutting be sure to de-burr the edges for a neat job! (Mine isn't cleaned up in this pic.) Step Four Now you will make the plates in which you will mount the chassis to your axles. I cut the aluminum to just over the stock plate width. In fact, use the stock bracket as a guide for marking your mounting holes! Mock it all up, drill it out and then you will need to decide how far apart you want your bolts that will mount to your chassis. I set mine 1" apart for stability. Go ahead and drill the holes out and slide your bolt through and using the nuts you purchased, attach that puppy! (Do the same for the front, but add width enough for servo mounting.) Step Five Cut the brake line the same legnth as your chassis and insert into one side...simple as that. This adds stability and won't let the chassis flex up and down. Step Six Using the center line you made earlier and the stock skid plate, mark and drill your holes for mounting the tranny. Once drilled go ahead and mount the tranny to check for clearance issues that may arise. I flattened the channels and used a nut for stability whn mounting Step Seven Mount that sucker all up!! You are ready to get it all together now...ESC...reciever...BEC...Lipo...It's yours to work with now! You should have right at 3 3/4" ground clearance. How does it perform? http://s511.photobucket.com/albums/s...hunderBlue.flv |

| Yup! It's BTA steering...just flipped the servo backwards. No shocks and links in the way now..plenty of room back there for steering! I also shaved off the shock links on the axles so they don't hang up on the rocks! |

Do you have the SKQ# or part number for the ABS plastic? We went to Lowes and Home Depot and can't find the plastic. Everyone thought we where CRAZY. HAHA Matt

WOW...WOW...WOW thats awesome. Um would it hurt to make a mount under the tranny out of aluminum just to stiffin it up a bit I know the skid helps keep the bottom of the case together. Would be cool if you could clock the axles a bit too. This is the simplest setup I have seen to date. Everyone should have one! Keep up the good work.

Go to the window screens repair section of Lowes. Comes in 6' section for $3.39 if i remember correctly. Very flexible!
