Default Shimming gears

I have been reading about installing overdrive and / or underdrive gears in the AX-10. I have read that shimming the gears is sometimes needed, which harkens to the little I know about setting up gears on 1:1 rigs. So this is my question: On these AX-10's, when you swap out the axle gears, do you need to shim the top of the carrier (small side), the bottom of the carrier (big side), or the pinion? Or, does it just depend on the specific situation and how things are meshing (or not meshing)?

Thanks

when i put in the o.d gears, just bolted them to locker and dropped them back in. No shimming or any additional adjustments.

Could be any of the three, or none at all. And due to 'production tolerances' there's little chance it'd be the same axle to axle, so there's no saying it won't be different even between the front and rear axles. Going to hafta make the commitment and plunge in on that one. Best of luck to ya.

Thanks! Sounds good. I've never done it before so just wanted to get more of an idea in my head about these things go. Can't learn to swim without getting wet!

Thanks

That's pretty much it. I've been lucky that I've never had any that "had" to be shimmed, but a few that probably could have benefited from it.
